Abstract Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a class of fluorinated chemicals used widely in consumer industrial products. Their human toxicity ecosystem impacts have received extensive public, scientific regulatory attention. Regulatory PFAS guidance is rapidly evolving, with the inclusion wider range included advisories continued decrease what deemed safe concentrations. In this study we collated concentration data for over 45,000 surface groundwater samples from around world to assess global extent contamination their potential future environmental burden. Here show that substantial fraction sampled waters exceeds drinking water values, exceedance depending on jurisdiction source. Additionally, current monitoring practices probably underestimate environment given limited suite typically quantified but concern. An improved understanding embodied products required burden develop mitigation measures. While focus study, it also highlights society’s need better understand use, fate anthropogenic chemicals.

Landfills are the final stage of urban wastes containing perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFASs). PFASs in landfill leachate may contaminate surrounding groundwater. As major environmental pollutants, emerging have raised global concern. Besides widely reported legacy PFASs, distribution potential toxic effects numerous remain unclear, unknown still need discovery characterization. This study proposed a comprehensive method for PFAS screening samples using suspect nontarget analysis. A total 48 from 10 classes were identified; nine novel including eight chloroperfluoropolyether carboxylates (Cl-PFPECAs) bistriflimide (HNTf2) first time leachate, where Cl-PFPECA-3,1 Cl-PFPECA-2,2 media. Per- and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) concentrations were investigated in hepatic tissue of four dolphin species stranded along the south-east coast Australia between 2006 2021; Burrunan (Tursiops australis), common bottlenose truncatus), Indo-Pacific aduncus), short-beaked (Delphinus delphis). Two populations represented dataset have highest reported global population ∑25PFAS (Port Phillip Bay median 9750 ng/g ww, n = 3, Gippsland Lakes 3560 8), which 50–100 times higher than other here; (50 9), (80 1), (61 12). Pasig Laguna de Bay River, which drains a urban conurbation, detected at concentrations typical global rivers. Unexpectedly, did not detect water or sediments density catchments, despite our instrument limits being lower than vast reported We hypothesize that septic tanks, as dominant wastewater treatment practice may control release into groundwater Philippines. no currently exist to validate supposition.
