Transforming CO2 into fuels by utilizing sunlight is promising to synchronously overcome global warming and energy-supply issues. It crucial design efficient photocatalysts with intriguing features such as robust light-harvesting ability, strong redox potential, high charge-separation, excellent durability. Hitherto, a single-component photocatalyst incapable simultaneously meet all these criteria. Inspired natural photosynthesis, constructing artificial Z-scheme provides facile way conquer bottlenecks. In this review, we firstly introduce the fundamentals of photocatalytic reduction systems. Thereafter discuss state-of-the-art reduction, whereby special attention placed on predominant factors that affect photoactivity. Additionally, further modifications are important for photocatalysis reviewed.

Abstract The activity of heterogeneous photocatalytic H 2 O activation in Fenton‐like processes is closely related to the local electron density reaction centre atoms. However, recombination electron‐hole pairs arising from random charge transfer greatly restricts oriented delivery active center. Here we show a defect engineered iron single atom photocatalyst (Fe 1 ‐N v /CN, Fe atoms dispersed on carbon nitride with abundant nitrogen vacancies) for under visible light irradiation. Based DFT calculations and transient absorption spectroscopy results, vacancies serve as trap sites, which can directionally drive electrons concentrate formation highly concentrated at sites significantly improves conversion efficiency. Therefore, optimized catalyst exhibiting higher ciprofloxacin degradation activity, was up 18 times that pristine CN.

Abstract Semiconductor photocatalysis is currently attracting tremendous attention as it holds great potential to address the issues of energy shortage and environmental pollution. 2D materials are excellent candidates for owing their attractive structural electronic properties. However, practical applications still hindered due limitations, such fast electron–hole recombination poor redox ability, both which lead low efficiency photocatalytic reactions. Constructing a heterojunction most widely used strategy solve these problems. In particular, heterojunctions composed interfaced with other semiconductors different dimensionalities can integrate respective advantages mitigate drawbacks each component. Hence, this review focuses on recent developments in rational design material‐based photocatalysts configurations. The synthetic strategies, physicochemical properties, component functions, mechanisms, systematically summarized. Emphasis placed correlations between performance configuration. Finally, ongoing challenges directions future development also proposed.

The heterojunction in photocatalysis establishes an internal electric field between the semiconductors, which is one of effective methods for enhancing separation photogenerated carriers semiconductors.
