Waterborne heavy metals pose significant threats to both the environment and public health, causing neurological damage, developmental disorders, organ cancer. It is essential address contamination of various water bodies by these hazardous substances due their persistent nature lack biodegradability. This review thoroughly explores traditional modern strategies utilized remedy sources contaminated with evaluates effectiveness potential scalability each method. A literature survey reveals several effective for removing from water: adsorption, flotation, ion exchange, chemical precipitation, membrane-based filtration, coagulation, flocculation, phytoremediation, electrochemical methods. In our examination, we discussed agents/adsorbents used, efficiency removal technique, operating conditions, intrinsic advantages disadvantages approach. Summarizing key findings, noted a focus on adsorption techniques; however, challenges include selectively diverse ions, prolonged retention times, cycling stability. While membrane methods are practical, issues like large-volume sludge formation exist. Although electrical-based appear promising, solutions needed industrial-scale separation as well. Prioritizing real wastewater samples in studies crucial. Future research should emphasize eco-friendly, cost-effective

Mercury (Hg) pollution remains an environmental global concern due to its non-degradable and toxic nature. Natural anthropogenic sources of Hg adversely affect the functioning aquatic ecosystems biological processes. In sub-Saharan Africa (SSA), unregulated artisanal small-scale gold mining (ASGM) contributes up 20% production uses 205–496 tonnes/yr Hg. Despite being a vital economic driver for 20–30 million people, ASGM threatens health systems from pollution, presenting complex challenge that demands urgent interventions. This review seeks (1) establish current status (2) explore impacts Hg, (3) highlight proposed interventions in SSA. We examined publications institutional reports between 2000 2023 addressing impacts, Results indicate rise expansion intensification ASGM. West remained highest contributor (50.2%), followed by Central (39.6%), Southern (9.6%), Eastern (<1%). Contamination freshwater ecosystems, toxicity biota, risks humans were evident. Alternative Hg-free technologies, including physical, metallurgical, pyrometallurgical, investigated case studies recommended adoption.

Arctic rivers are receiving increased attention for their contributing of mercury (Hg) to the Ocean. Despite this, knowledge on both terrestrial release sources and levels Hg in limited. Within Arctic, Barents region has a high industrial development, including multiple potential sources. This study presents first overview Norwegian Russian mainland draining Sea. Source categories cover mining metallurgy industry; historical pulp paper production; municipal solid waste handling; fossil fuel combustion; past military activities. Available data freshwater bodies near identified reviewed. Levels were occasionally exceeding national pollution control limits, thereby posing concern local human population wildlife. However, studies sparse often unsystematic. Finally, we present new measured five rivers. These reveal strong seasonality levels, with total annual flux constituting 2% panarctic total. With this insight aspire contribute international efforts reducing pollution, such as through effective implementation Minamata Convention. Future documenting exposed warranted.

This paper presents the results of a multidisciplinary study with aim assessing potential combined risk from consuming locally harvested food products in Euro-Arctic region Norway, Finland, and Russia. The three important contaminant groups—radioactive substances, heavy metals, persistent organic pollutants (POPs)—were measured samples such as berries, mushrooms, fish, birds, reindeer, moose; they were sampled 2013–2015. To assess pollution levels investigate trends, similarities, variations between different groups, subsequent multivariate statistical analysis was performed. showed that, general, radioactive toxic elements, POPs below permitted EU maximum content products. However, revealed some correlations, peculiarities accumulation contaminants various species, which allowed for better understanding mechanisms interaction groups. It also gave insight into possible added risks helped pinpoint species that could serve reference markers food. Mushrooms, reindeer found to be assessments contents metals substances. Further research, well development methodologies assessments, are recommended.
