Abstract The spatial distribution of environmental conditions can determine where organisms and cannot live. When the microhabitats within a landscape is mediated by shape its surface, structural complexity indirectly affect niche distributions. This study investigates how light availability patterns change along gradient measured as surface rugosity height range in tropical shallow reefs. We used 260,000 high frequency resolution measurements across 903 locations to proportion that available at reef surface. find on highly variable, with close sites experiencing up 25.7 mol/m 2 d daily photon input difference. After accounting for attenuation due depth, decreases increasing rugosity: unit increase local corresponds an 11-29% decrease availability. Local distributions scales, while broader extent site metrics do not capture this variability. Our results suggest enhances variability, indirect effects other variables their interactions are essential understanding ecosystem processes.

Abstract Function-based studies have opened a new chapter in our understanding of coral reefs. Unfortunately, we are opening this as the world’s reefs rapidly transform. In context, one most important roles function-based is to inform reef conservation. At critical juncture, chance reflect on where come from, and going, functional ecology, with specific consideration what means for approaches conserving As focal examples, examine role corals reefs, practice culling crown-of-thorns starfish, from perspective. We also consider how papers special issue build current understanding. Ultimately, highlight robust scientific investigation, based an ecosystem functions, will be key helping us navigate through crisis.

ABSTRACT The reef system is the main feature of Recife de Fora Marine Park (RFMP) on East Brazilian coast. High hydrodynamics introduce nutrients, sediment, and contaminants from rivers while promoting flat erosion. To identify threats to ecosystems, we employed a foraminifera-based assessment using FoRAM Index FORAM Stress Index, combined with analyses environmental variables. Results revealed instability/stress in part western backreef stations, near Buranhém river output, general estuarine influence. Reef surroundings data are marked by health decline instability/stress, forereef indicated equilibrium/stability. Active offshore processes partially compensated for coastal negative influences, helping remain healthy active “cleansing” waves tides. results established baseline ecosystem quality low-cost biodiversity queries, representing an advance foraminifera important long-term monitoring programs.
