A chimeric protein, in which a cationic antimicrobial peptide was fused to the adhesive self-assembling moiety of fungal class I hydrophobin, produced and used easily functionalize gold nanoparticles (f-AuNPs). f-AuNPs are able bind Escherichia coli Staphylococcus epidermidis bacteria, tested as model organisms. reverse colorimetric assay then set up based on induced aggregation free f-AuNPs. This leads changes optical properties solution, visible even by naked eyes. approach allows detection 10 CFU mL-1 E. within 15 min can be applicable detect bacterial contamination real matrices. Notably, variation combined machine-learning methodologies inferring data from photos colored solutions, acquired smartphones. fast, highly practical flexible system, would enable on-site measurements and, therefore, help prevent significant contaminations.
