The Government of Korea uses green remodeling (GR) as a central policy for achieving carbon neutrality in the building sector. However, despite GR’s energy-saving benefits, it raises embodied (EC) due to incorporation new materials, and there is lack impact analysis assessment research. Thus, this study established GR-LCA methodology evaluate environmental impacts (EIs) GR, including EC. disaggregated assessed effects EC energy on GR terms proportion EC, six EI categories, reduction impacts. revealed that accounted 10.6%, reducing 9.89% when EPD materials were used. In across EIs, GWP was reduced 0.84 EP 0.96. ODP, ADP, AP, POCP, all elevated by high EIs from material inputs, increased 626.7, 1.04, 1.16, 250.09, respectively. Ultimately, 24.9% considering only usage, 16.1% When applied, efficiency improved an additional 0.6%, indicating minimal application effect. Based these findings, differences compared constructions, limitations, potential improvements discussed.

The construction industry accounts for approximately 40% of the global carbon emissions and is largest consumer materials energy. Given Paris Agreement target towards net-zero greenhouse gas (GHG) emissions, significant changes are required in design, use buildings. This study applies a qualitative approach that combines systematic literature review (SLR) with in-depth semi-structured interviews experts to analyse existing neutrality frameworks decision support tools; expanding current knowledge by bringing fore challenges experienced implementing these frameworks. research effort reveals an inadequacy effective decision-making on decarbonisation strategies along project lifecycle. A novel framework breaks down activities points across entire lifecycle proposed bridge this gap literature. developed defines whole cost, energy use, exergetic as four critical underpinning variables considered making decisions. It further details key evaluation criteria facilitate at each stage provides decision-makers contextual guidance assessing impact their decisions planning, delivery, closure operations phases project. will assist academic researchers, building owners professionals keep track project's encourage best practices emission reduction sector.

This study aims to examine the literature related environmental Life Cycle Assessment (LCA) for buildings and buildings' refurbishment from 1994 2022 by implementing a statistical analysis based on 'Web of Science' databases. LCA is viewed as consolidated process that measures performance their services, aiming address potential impacts over life cycle buildings. A total 1336 retrieved journal publications 169 in building refurbishment. The articles' patterns were investigated terms subject categories, journals, countries, most highly cited articles. findings reveal have increased period 1994–2022, with China being leading country contributing largest number articles possessing significant influence, followed USA While Portugal country, Italy, Buildings' Refurbishments. 97.08% written English, 2.04% German, 0.68% Spanish. French Japanese remaining languages, each one publication, accounting 0.2% publications. In contrast refurbishment, only two English (98.7%) German (1.3%). Results show area differs depending type focusing construction engineering while focused topics. According IF, influential was renewable & sustainable energy LCA. However, distribution within still limited, assessment methods theme need catch up clear gap impact mitigation methodologies, which will be prominent direction future research.

Equitable climate policies are required for a just and rapid energy transition. A widely discussed policy instrument is carbon taxes. Previous studies of the distributional implications taxation focused on uniform taxes across sectors. Differentiated tax rates goods services received less attention. Here we model an alternative design accounting distribution household consumption footprints 88 countries covering global north south. The distinguishes luxury basic sets higher prices luxury. reduces yearly emissions by 6% compared with no inequalities reduced tax. By 2050, saves around 100 gigatonnes dioxide equivalents, which 75% what needed households to remain within 2° consistent pathway.

Abstract Building renovation is urgently required to reduce the environmental impact associated with building stock. Typically, performed by envelope insulation and/or changing fossil-based heating system. The goal of this paper provide strategies for robust considering uncertainties on future evolution climate, energy grid, and user behaviors, amongst others applying life cycle assessment cost analysis. study includes identifying optimal options systems representatives from all construction periods that are currently in need Switzerland. findings emphasize paramount importance system replacements across periods. Notably, when incorporating bio-based materials, a balance emerges between reduction low operation costs. This facilitates robust, equitable, low-carbon transformations Switzerland similar Northern European contexts while avoiding carbon spike due embodied renovation.
