Crustaceans as Key Prey: Insights Into the Dietary Partitioning of Four Carnivorous Fishes in the Nansha Islands, South China Sea

ABSTRACT
Small
carnivorous
fishes
serve
as
important
mesopredators
in
coral
reef
ecosystems.
However,
the
habitat
and
prey
availability
degradation
within
these
ecosystems
has
intensified
trend
of
body
size
miniaturization
interspecific
competition
among
species.
To
better
understand
food
selection
resource
partitioning
strategies
mesopredators,
we
conducted
a
comprehensive
study
on
feeding
habits
four
small
fish
species
collected
from
reefs
Nansha
Islands.
This
employed
combination
morphological
analysis
molecular
identification
gut
contents,
along
with
stable
isotope
analysis.
Similar
items,
mostly
semi‐digested/undigested
remains/fragments
crustaceans,
fish,
mollusk
were
detected
guts
analyzed
fishes.
High‐throughput
sequencing
based
DNA
barcoding
identified
approximately
24
taxa
belonging
to
Arthropoda,
Chordata,
Mollusca,
Arthropoda
being
most
abundant
group,
accounting
for
82.2%–92%
total
sequences
across
Stable
further
revealed
that
trophic
levels
ranged
3.4
3.6.
The
results
overlap
isotopes
contrasted
those
obtained
high‐throughput
sequencing,
highlighting
distinct
characteristics
complementary
strengths
methods.
broadens
current
understanding
ecology

crustaceans

primary

located

Haitang
Bay

northern
region
of
Sanya,
Hainan
Island.
The
sea
area
surrounding
WZZ
represents
a
typical
tropical
marine
ecosystem,
characterised
by
diverse
and
complex
habitats.
Therefore,
there
rich
variety
fish
species
at
WZZ.
ecosystem
was
seriously
destroyed
initially
1970s-1980s
recovered
1990s,
then
constructed
as
first
national
ranch
demonstration
China
2019.
As
an
important
high
trophic
vertebrate
understanding
composition
distribution
could
help
us
to
recognise
status
supply
scientific
data
for
construction
area.

study
used

technology
investigate

Synopsis
Coral
reef
community
exhibits
high
species
diversity
and
a
broad
range
of
biological
relationships,

widespread
symbiosis
complex
food
utilization
patterns.

symbiotic
relationship
between
commonly
crinoid
host
Comaster
schlegelii
its
ophiuroid
obligatory
symbiont
Gymnolophus
obscura.

Understanding
an
ecosystem’s
trophic
structure
is
essential
for
determining

dynamic
