ABSTRACT Small carnivorous fishes serve as important mesopredators in coral reef ecosystems. However, the habitat and prey availability degradation within these ecosystems has intensified trend of body size miniaturization interspecific competition among species. To better understand food selection resource partitioning strategies mesopredators, we conducted a comprehensive study on feeding habits four small fish species collected from reefs Nansha Islands. This employed combination morphological analysis molecular identification gut contents, along with stable isotope analysis. Similar items, mostly semi‐digested/undigested remains/fragments crustaceans, fish, mollusk were detected guts analyzed fishes. High‐throughput sequencing based DNA barcoding identified approximately 24 taxa belonging to Arthropoda, Chordata, Mollusca, Arthropoda being most abundant group, accounting for 82.2%–92% total sequences across Stable further revealed that trophic levels ranged 3.4 3.6. The results overlap isotopes contrasted those obtained high‐throughput sequencing, highlighting distinct characteristics complementary strengths methods. broadens current understanding ecology findings reveal crustaceans are primary source Islands, differing previous assumptions their diets predominantly fish‐based. Additionally, differentiated utilization crustacean resources suggests marine benthic invertebrates may play crucial role supporting degraded ecosystems, potentially helping mitigate environmental stress they face.

Wuzhizhou Island (WZZ) is located in Haitang Bay the northern region of Sanya, Hainan Island. The sea area surrounding WZZ represents a typical tropical marine ecosystem, characterised by diverse and complex habitats. Therefore, there rich variety fish species at WZZ. ecosystem was seriously destroyed initially 1970s-1980s recovered 1990s, then constructed as first national ranch demonstration China 2019. As an important high trophic vertebrate understanding composition distribution could help us to recognise status supply scientific data for construction area. This study used eDNA technology investigate community provided basis realising protecting South Sea.

Synopsis Coral reef community exhibits high species diversity and a broad range of biological relationships, including widespread symbiosis complex food utilization patterns. In our study, we investigated the symbiotic relationship between commonly crinoid host Comaster schlegelii its ophiuroid obligatory symbiont Gymnolophus obscura. Using combination fatty acid biomarkers stable isotopic compositions, explored differences in their organic matter strategies nutritional relationships. The result isotopes revealed that G. obscura had higher δ15N values than host. Particulate phytoplankton were identified as primary sources for both species, however C. showed proportional contribution from benthic microalgae. Fatty markers was more dependent on microalgae such diatoms, less debritic bacteria Elevated similar source rates suggest feeds materials filtered by crinoids have diet to Our results provide insights into patterns ophiuroids, while also supplying foundational data how select adapt environment.

Understanding an ecosystem’s trophic structure is essential for determining the dynamic interplay between natural and human-induced changes. However, limited knowledge of local food web structures, especially seasonal structure, hinders our understanding ecosystem’ stability dynamics. The offshore waters southern Zhejiang Province China are amongst important fishing in China, which undergoing multiple stressors, such as over-exploitation, global warming, acidification. This study investigated changes spectrum fishery community this region based on δ13C–δ15N isotope metrics identified key types organisms webs different seasons. results showed that summer significantly diverged from those other seasons, with benthivorous fish predominating, higher positions, feeding specialization predators. lowest level length were observed spring attribute to generally smaller size species community. winter maximal resource occupancy but redundancy due specialized top predators, suggesting vulnerability disturbance. Based bi-plot values, it can be found Planktivorous occupy a position structure. Seasonal fluctuations illustrated diversity complexity webs, provided insights characterizing marine ecological processes, conducive restoration fisheries development management strategies.

Off-seasonal water level regulations disrupt the biological traits and phenological rhythms of native fish species, yet their impacts on interspecific trophic interactions remain understudied. This study employed stable isotope analysis to assess dynamics three species (Parabramis pekinensis, Carassius auratus, Toxabramis swinhonis) across different periods in Hongze Lake. The findings revealed that all occupied similar mid-level positions, with no significant difference among (p > 0.05). During high-water periods, P. pekinensis T. swinhonis exploited broader niches, while C. auratus relied a narrower diet. In contrast, during low-water expanded its niche, reduced isotopic niche widths. Niche overlap showed minimal increased except for highest between mid-water periods. variation aligns shifts dietary reliance, as POM was predominant component but contribution varied significantly These indicated adaptive facilitated coexistence these off-seasonal regulation may intensify competition. insights are essential refining management policies developing sustainable fishery strategies Lake other water-level-regulated systems.
