Atmospheric chemistry research has been growing rapidly in China the last 25 years since concept of "air pollution complex" was first proposed by Professor Xiaoyan TANG 1997. For papers published 2021 on air (only included Web Science Core Collection database were considered), more than 24 000 authored or co-authored scientists working China. In this paper, we review a limited number representative and significant studies atmospheric few years, including (1) sources emission inventories, (2) chemical processes, (3) interactions with meteorology, weather climate, (4) between biosphere atmosphere, (5) data assimilation. The intention not to provide complete all progress made but rather serve as starting point for learning about advances reviewed paper have enabled theoretical framework complex be established, provided robust scientific support highly successful control policies China, created great opportunities education, training, career development many graduate students young scientists. This further highlights that developing low-income countries are heavily affected can benefit from these advances, whilst at same time acknowledging challenges still remain hopefully addressed over next decades.

Abstract. PM2.5 pollution is a major air quality issue that deteriorates human health, and numerous studies have focused on in regions such as the North China Plain (NCP) Yangtze River Delta (YRD). However, characteristics of concentrations associated formation mechanism transport corridor (referred to SWLY) between NCP YRD are largely ignored. Based observational data, we find number events SWLY comparable NCP, far exceeding YRD, which indicative severity this area. Utilizing regional climate model, isolate effect seesaw events, e.g., atmospheric stagnation accumulation over SWLY. Specifically, stagnation, each other, collectively account for an average 67 % days, with 75 µg m−3, fraction (85 %) even larger severe haze 150 m−3. Furthermore, connection large-scale circulation examined. The transregional pollutants from (YRD NCP) likely stimulated by positive (negative) negative (positive) geopotential height anomalies at 500 hPa located northern China. health due short-term exposure induced investigated, yielding total 8634 (95 CI: 6023–11 223) 9496 6552–12 413) premature deaths, respectively, during winter 2014–2019, high 9 deaths China, though takes up less than 1 China's While general projected occur more frequently under warming climate, study indicates importance emission control alleviate stagnation.

Abstract Every spring, biomass burning (BB) plumes from the Indochina Peninsula (ICP) are transported downstream by specific synoptic weather processes, potentially influencing regional through radiative effects of BB aerosols. However, favorable patterns for transport toward inland China and how they interact with aerosols not fully understood. In this study, we identified three predominant processes associated evident plume southern over past 20 years. The first two—the low pressure continent cold frontal passage—account more than 76% all events. low‐pressure events accompanied surface warming, a cyclonic system hovers China, southerly winds favoring northward movement throughout lower troposphere. second type is caused passage lasting only 1–2 days, which lifts to above 700 hPa transports them downstream. To further explore aerosol feedback on different patterns, conducted WRF‐Chem simulations found an average 2°C cooling near surface, along 1.5°C warming in troposphere coast East Asia. Consequently, stable atmosphere suppresses but enhances system. Meanwhile, anomalous circulations align those during passage, boosting 45% (20%) rise CO (BC) belt China. This work highlights importance considering interactions between wildfire pollutants processes.
