Protected areas are intended to safeguard biodiversity in perpetuity, yet evidence suggests that widespread legal changes undermine protected area durability and efficacy. We documented these changes-protected downgrading, downsizing, degazettement (PADDD) events-in the United States Amazonian countries compiled available data globally. Governments of enacted 269 440 PADDD events, respectively. Between 1892 2018, 73 3749 removing 519,857 square kilometers from protection tempering regulations an additional 1,659,972 kilometers; 78% events were since 2000. Biodiversity science in China has seen rapid growth over recent decades, ranging from baseline biodiversity studies to understanding the processes behind evolution across dynamic regions such as Qinghai-Tibetan Plateau. We review research, including species catalogues; monitoring; origins, distributions, maintenance and threats biodiversity; biodiversity-related ecosystem function services; ecosystems' responses global change. Next, we identify priority topics offer suggestions priorities for future research China. These include (i) ecology biogeography of Plateau surrounding mountains, that subtropical tropical forests China; (ii) marine inland aquatic (iii) effective conservation management maintain synergies between socio-economic development fulfil China's vision becoming an ecological civilization. China's coastal wetlands are critically important to shorebirds. Substantial loss of tidal flats, shorebirds' primary foraging grounds, has occurred from land claim and other processes, is driving population declines in multiple species. Smooth cordgrass Spartina alterniflora was intentionally introduced the coast China 1979 promote conversion flats into dry since spread rapidly. The occurrence S. reduces availability roosting habitat for shorebirds, may be particularly detrimental places that have experienced flat loss. However, extent which encroaching upon shorebird throughout mainland China, its intersection with loss, not been quantified. Here, we i) estimate change spatial between 2000 2015 where internationally numbers shorebirds recorded; ii) map coverage at same set sites; and, iii) investigate these two threats intersect. Identifying and protecting hotspots of endemism species richness is crucial for mitigating the global biodiversity crisis. However, our understanding spatial diversity patterns far from complete, which severely limits ability to conserve hotspots. Here, we report a comprehensive analysis amphibian in China, one most species-rich countries on Earth. Our study combines 20 y field surveys with new molecular analyses 521 described also identifies 100 potential cryptic species. Abstract Biodiversity conservation is essential for realizing China's new vision of an ecological civilization. China has been implementing numerous massive sustainability and protected area (ES&PA) programs across the entire country. These have greatly restored degraded environments, improved provisions critical ecosystem services increased rural livelihoods. However, despite general improvements in environmental quality, trend rapid biodiversity loss not significantly reduced. We found that most current ES&PA lack explicit goals, thus limited contributions to biodiversity.
