Other effective area-based conservation measures (OECMs) have been a feature of global biodiversity targets since 2010 (Aichi Targets, Kunming-Montreal Global Biodiversity Framework), although the concept has only relatively recently formally defined. Although uptake limited to date, there is much interest in identifying OECMs contribute target protecting at least 30% terrestrial, freshwater and ocean areas by 2030, conjunction with protected areas. Australia long history area development across public, private Indigenous lands, but consideration policy begun that country. We review principles proposed Australian Government for highlight where these deviate from guidance or established policy. examined various land use categories mechanisms determine likelihood categories/mechanisms meeting OECM definition, particular focus on longevity mechanism sustain biodiversity. identified number would meet definition small. A potentially perverse outcomes classifying an as are highlighted order guide proactive program design prevent such occurring.

Predicting and mapping coral reef diversity at moderate scales can assist spatial planning prioritizing conservation activities. We made coarse-scale (6.25 km 2 ) predictive models for numbers of fish species community composition starting with a spatially complete database 70 environmental variables available 7039 mapped cells in the Western Indian Ocean. An ensemble model was created from process variable elimination selectivity to make best predictions irrespective human influences. This compared using preselected commonly used evaluate climate change fishing water quality Many (~27) contributed number models, but local biomass, depth, retention connectivity were dominant predictors. The key human-influenced included biomass distance populations, weaker associations sediments nutrients. Climate-influenced generally median sea surface temperature (SST) contributions declining order SST kurtosis, bimodality, excess summer heat, skewness, rate rise, cover. Community variability explained by richness axes damselfishes-angelfishes butterflyfishes-parrotfishes. Numbers damselfish-angelfish ecologically separated damselfishes declined increasing temperature, cumulative chronic stresses. Species butterflyfish-parrotfish butterflyfish acute variability, rise. Several hotspots found East African Coastal Current Ecoregion centered Tanzania, followed Mayotte, southern Kenya, northern Mozambique. If be maintained, broad distributions combined compensatory responses should maintain high ecological resilience other stressors.

Global, regional, and national targets have been set to protect conserve at least 30 % of the ocean by 2030, in recognition important benefits healthy ecosystems, including for human well-being. Many these recognize importance quality, not just quantity, areas that are included %, such as marine protected (MPAs). For example, Convention on Biological Diversity's Global Biodiversity Framework Target 3 calls be effectively conserved managed, ecologically representative, well-connected, equitably governed. Protecting a percent area is sole goal – protection must effective equitable. To better understand quality biodiversity conservation afforded, addition quantity protected, we looked MPAs across 13 studies used The MPA Guide related tools track Stage Establishment Level Protection measures expected outcomes diverse locations, scales, cultural, political, contexts. We show standardized assessments can help (1) evaluate improve existing MPAs; (2) plan new (3) compare various scales; (4) progress towards coverage targets; (5) enable clear communication collaboration, (6) inform actions needed achieve policy their underlying environmental social goals, among others. share common opportunities, challenges, recommendations tracking using measure global targets.

Marine protected areas (MPAs) can allow some fish populations to rebuild within their borders in impacted by overfishing, but the effectiveness of reserves is highly dependent on how effectively fishing mortality controlled, which turn depends level fishery management implementation. In Cuba’s Gardens Queen MPA, largest Caribbean, a variety measures have been implemented ensure social, economic, and political viability protecting such large area. Here, we evaluate biological response, terms density biomass commercially valuable ecologically important reef species, spatial gradient enforcement, biomass, species. The enforcement characterized protection, effort, patrolling distance nearest port, intensity. Fish were estimated from visual scuba surveys. Areas with higher levels support average (up 1378 kg/ha) 2367 indv./ha) fishes comparison very low or no (estimates 757 kg/ha 1090 indv./ha density, respectively). These serve as proxies development harvest control rules that adjust pressure according ratio fished unfished through use MPA Density Ratio method.
