Abstract Electric field calculations are increasingly used for dose characterization of transcranial electrical stimulation (tES), but existing open-source head models inaccurate extracephalic montages that include electrodes placed on the neck or shoulder. We introduce “Ernie Extended” model, an MRI- and CT-derived model extending to upper shoulder region. Simulations tES targeting cerebellum supplementary motor area show significant differences in electric fields when using Ernie Extended compared non-extended model. Additionally, we propose electrode layout complements electroencephalography 10– 20 system with positions. demonstrate use this optimizing multi-electrode cerebellar stimulation, enhancing focality reducing off-target particularly spinal cord. Our results highlight practical value accurately characterizing doses produced by more caudal brain regions.

Altered brain connectivity and atypical neural oscillations have been observed in autism, yet their relationship with autistic traits nonclinical populations remains underexplored. Here, we employ electroencephalography to examine functional connectivity, oscillatory power, broadband aperiodic activity during a dynamic facial emotion processing task 101 typically developing children aged 4 12 years. We investigate associations between these electrophysiological measures of dynamics as assessed by the Social Responsiveness Scale, 2nd Edition (SRS-2). Our results revealed that increased processing-related across theta (4 7 Hz) beta (13 30 frequencies correlated positively higher SRS-2 scores, predominantly right-lateralized (theta) bilateral (beta) cortical networks. Additionally, steeper 1/f-like slope (spectral exponent) fronto-central electrodes was associated scores. Greater aperiodic-adjusted alpha power further both scores slopes. These findings underscore important links children. Future work could extend assess electroencephalography-derived markers potential mechanisms underlying behavioral difficulties autism.

Abstract Stochastic resonance (SR) is the phenomenon wherein introduction of a suitable level noise enhances detection subthreshold signals in non linear systems. It manifests across various physical and biological systems, including human brain. Psychophysical experiments have confirmed behavioural impact stochastic on auditory, somatic, visual perception. Aging renders brain more susceptible to noise, possibly causing differences SR between young elderly individuals. This study investigates motion accuracy throughout lifespan, with 214 participants ranging age from 18 82. Our objective was determine optimal induce an SR-like response both old populations. Consistent existing literature, our findings reveal diminishing advantage age, indicating that efficacy addition progressively diminishes. Additionally, as individuals peak performance achieved lower levels noise. provides first insight into how changes lifespan healthy adults establishes foundation for understanding pathological alterations perceptual processes associated aging.

To understand the consistently observed spatial distribution of white-matter (WM) aging, developmentally driven theories termed "retrogenesis" have gained traction, positing that order WM tract development predicts declines. Regions develop first are expected to deteriorate last, i.e. "last-in-first-out". Alternatively, regions which most rapidly may also decline in or "gains-predict-loss". The validity such remains uncertain, part due lack clarity on definition developmental order. Importantly, our recent findings suggest aging is associated with physiological parameters as perfusion, be linked fibre metabolic need, turn varies size. Here we address extent degree determined by trajectory (i.e. retrogenesis) and/or state. We obtained microstructural and perfusion measures using data from Human Connectome Project Aging (HCP-A), complemented a meta-analysis involving maps calibre macrovascular volume. Our results (1) while tracts appear last finish myelinating display slowest pattern not fully explained retrogenesis; fact, time courses emergence myelination give rise opposite associations decline; (2) earlier higher mean axon lower degrees aging; (3) tend exhibit relatively sustained CBF rate lengthening arterial transit times (ATT), suggestive collateral blood supply. These were sex dependent tract-specific manner. Future work will investigate whether these ultimately influenced each tract's demand role flow.

Abstract Neurophysiological signals, comprised of both periodic (e.g., oscillatory) and aperiodic non-oscillatory) activity, undergo complex developmental changes between childhood adulthood. With much the existing literature primarily focused on features brain function, our understanding signals is still in its infancy. Here, we are first to examine age-related (peak frequency power) (slope offset) activity using optically pumped magnetometers (OPMs), a new, wearable magnetoencephalography (MEG) technology that particularly well-suited for studying development. We examined these spectral sample ( N =65) toddlers (1-3 years), children (4-5 young adults (20-26 (27-38 years). Consistent with extant literature, found significant decreases slope offset, peak power were frequency-specific; show effect sizes also varied across regions. This work not only adds growing body highlighting advantages OPMs, especially development, but contributes novel information regarding variation neurophysiological age brain.
