Abstract Climate‐driven environmental change is increasingly impacting global fisheries and marine resource use. Fisheries provide a broad range of economic, social cultural benefits while delivering essential contributions to nutrient security human health. Despite this, little known about how climate will impact the availability quality seafood‐derived nutrients. Here, we quantified spatial temporal changes in nutritional commercially harvested eastern school whiting, Sillago flindersi , sampled throughout south‐east Australian ocean warming hotspot. Several nutrients measured S. including protein, ash, polyunsaturated fatty acids (PUFA) omega‐3 PUFA–docosahexaenoic acid (DHA, 22:6ɷ3), were related one or more factors (sea bottom temperature, depth chlorophyll). We also detected seasonal variability DHA ash composition species' distribution. Historical future modelling predicted decrease up 6% with increasing temperature under Representative Concentration Pathway (RCP) 4.5 8.5 emission scenarios. Overall, our results identified as rich source protein PUFAs for consumers supported emerging evidence that reductions may occur warming, specifically acids. The development forecasting tools seafood holds potential inform fishers managers locations times year target species optimal quality.

The warming trend of the Mediterranean Sea is a long-term process. It has resulted in northwards and westwards range expansion abundance increase thermophilic species, both native non-indigenous, shrinking cold-affinity species. Marine heatwaves (MHWs) are relatively short-term extreme episodes that responsible for spectacular mortality events some species have been extensively reported literature. In contrast, benefit from MHWs (the ‘winners’) much less studied. A record-breaking MHW occurred 2022 north-western Sea. We focus on three ‘winner’ green macroalgae Penicillus capitatus Microdictyon umbilicatum endemic seagrass Posidonia oceanica. capitatus, which mainly present area as an inconspicuous turf entangled filaments (espera stage), produced erect paintbrush-like stage where sexual reproduction takes place. umbilicatum, usually uncommon, bloomed to point clogging fishing nets. Finally, mass flowering P. oceanica late August–September, followed following year (April–May 2023) by extensive production dissemination fruits seeds. Both processes, one-off heatwaves, ‘losers’ ‘winners’, shape change structure functioning ecosystems.

Seaweed aquaculture is gaining traction globally as a solution to many climate issues. However, seaweeds themselves are also under threat of anthropogenically driven change. Here, we summarize climate-related challenges the seaweed industry, with focus on developing trade in North Atlantic. Specifically, three main challenges: i) abiotic change; ii) extreme events; and iii) disease & herbivory. Abiotic change includes negative effects ocean warming acidification, well altered seasonality due warming. This can lower biomass yield biochemical composition seaweeds. Extreme events cause considerable damage loss farms, particularly marine heatwaves, storms freshwater inputs. diseases have higher chance proliferating environmentally stressful conditions such decreased salinity. Herbivory causes but not researched relation Despite challenges, opportunities exist improve resilience change, summarized sections: future proof site selection; advances breeding microbiome manipulation; restorative aquaculture. We present case study where use predictive modelling illustrate suitable habitat for cultivation Atlantic Notably, there was large cultivating Alaria esculenta Laminaria digitata . show how selection priming microbe inoculates may be cost-effective scalable disease- thermal tolerance. Co-cultivation increase both biodiversity co-benefits. Finally, that restoration benefit from collaborating nursery techniques push improved legislation.
