The Heatwave of Summer 2022 in the North-Western Mediterranean Sea: Some Species Were Winners

The
warming
trend
of
the
Mediterranean
Sea
is
a
long-term
process.
It
has
resulted
in
northwards
and
westwards
range
expansion
abundance
increase
thermophilic
species,
both
native
non-indigenous,
shrinking
cold-affinity
species.
Marine
heatwaves
(MHWs)
are
relatively
short-term
extreme
episodes
that
responsible
for
spectacular
mortality
events
some
species
have
been
extensively
reported
literature.
In
contrast,
benefit
from
MHWs
(the
‘winners’)
much
less
studied.
A
record-breaking
MHW
occurred
2022
north-western
Sea.
We
focus
on
three
‘winner’
green
macroalgae
Penicillus
capitatus
Microdictyon
umbilicatum
endemic
seagrass
Posidonia
oceanica.
capitatus,
which
mainly
present
area
as
an
inconspicuous
turf
entangled
filaments
(espera
stage),
produced
erect
paintbrush-like
stage
where
sexual
reproduction
takes
place.
umbilicatum,
usually
uncommon,
bloomed
to
point
clogging
fishing
nets.
Finally,
mass
flowering
P.
oceanica
late
August–September,
followed
following
year
(April–May
2023)
by
extensive
production
dissemination
fruits
seeds.
Both
processes,
one-off
heatwaves,
‘losers’
‘winners’,
shape
change
structure
functioning
ecosystems.

Seaweed
aquaculture
is
gaining
traction
globally
as
a
solution
to
many
climate
issues.
However,
seaweeds
themselves
are
also
under
threat
of
anthropogenically
driven
change.
Here,
we
summarize
climate-related
challenges
the
seaweed
industry,
with
focus
on
developing
trade
in
North
Atlantic.
Specifically,
three
main
challenges:
i)
abiotic
change;
ii)
extreme
events;
and
iii)
disease
&
herbivory.
Abiotic
change
includes
negative
effects
ocean
warming
acidification,
well
altered
seasonality
due
warming.
This
can
lower
biomass
yield
biochemical
composition
seaweeds.
Extreme
events
cause
considerable
damage
loss
farms,
particularly
marine
heatwaves,
storms
freshwater
inputs.
diseases
have
higher
chance
proliferating
environmentally
stressful
conditions
such
decreased
salinity.

Despite
challenges,
opportunities
exist
improve
resilience
change,
summarized
sections:
future
proof
site
selection;
advances
breeding
microbiome
manipulation;
restorative
aquaculture.
We
present
case
study
where
use
predictive
modelling
illustrate
suitable
habitat
for
cultivation
Atlantic
Notably,
there
was
large
cultivating
Alaria
esculenta
Laminaria
digitata
.
show
how
selection
priming
microbe
inoculates
may
be
cost-effective
scalable
disease-
thermal
tolerance.
Co-cultivation
increase
both
biodiversity
co-benefits.
Finally,
that
restoration
benefit
from
collaborating
nursery
techniques
push
improved
legislation.

Nutritional quality of eastern school whiting (Sillago flindersi) under contemporary and future environmental conditions

Abstract
Climate‐driven
environmental
change
is
increasingly
impacting
global
fisheries
and
marine
resource
use.
Fisheries
provide
a
broad
range
of
economic,
social
cultural
benefits
while
delivering
essential
contributions
to
nutrient
security
human
health.
Despite
this,
little
known
about
how
climate
will
impact
the
availability
quality
seafood‐derived
nutrients.
Here,
we
quantified
spatial
temporal
changes
in
nutritional
commercially
harvested
eastern
school
whiting,
Sillago
flindersi
,
sampled
throughout
south‐east
Australian
ocean
warming
hotspot.
Several
nutrients
measured
S.
including
protein,
ash,
polyunsaturated
fatty
acids
(PUFA)
omega‐3
PUFA–docosahexaenoic
acid
(DHA,
22:6ɷ3),
were
related
one
or
more
factors
(sea
bottom
temperature,
depth
chlorophyll).
We
also
detected
seasonal
variability
DHA
ash
composition
species'
distribution.
Historical
future
modelling
predicted
decrease
up
6%
with
increasing
temperature
under
Representative
Concentration
Pathway
(RCP)
4.5
8.5
emission
scenarios.
Overall,
our
results
identified
as
rich
source
protein
PUFAs
for
consumers
supported
emerging
evidence
that
reductions
may
occur
warming,
specifically
acids.
The
development
forecasting
tools
seafood
holds
potential
inform
fishers
managers
locations
times
year
target
species
optimal
quality.
