The aim of the second Scientific Expedition Edgeøya Spitsbergen (SEES), which took place from 13 to 22 July 2022, was to study the consequences of climate warming in the High Arctic, building on ecological data gathered by the Dutch Arctic Station on Edgeøya between 1968 and 1987 and the first SEES expedition in 2015. In this Perspective essay, I ponder the actual purpose of SEES 2022, in which I participated as an early-career research scientist. The research activities were very limited and climate change was named as the restricting factor. Fifty researchers were accompanied by 50 tourists, journalists and policymakers. …

In August 2023, we both embarked on an icebreaker cruise ship in order to conduct fieldwork with and among passengers together four other scientists. Departing from Longyearbyen, Svalbard, this two-week ship-time took us the geographic North Pole, across Arctic Ocean sea ice, several locations northern Svalbard. While vessels operating as platforms of opportunity for researchers are not new, tourism polar regions has raised ethical sustainable concerns times increasing awareness regarding climate change. addition, cruises bringing tourists scientists currently objects vivid discussions academia media. Drawing our experience, aim contribute these recent debates. Building work Lamers et al. (2024), argue that misunderstanding concept platform can lead potentially poor data collection, scientists’ disappointment, detrimental reputation science actors. We carefully selecting research projects align specificities expedition tourism, facilitating nighttime effective strategies avoid misunderstandings. This may also enhance credibility companies often be accused science- greenwashing.

Polar tourism is continuously diversifying in order to provide unique experiences travellers. One of the ways which this currently happens by increasingly integrating scientific activities into expedition cruises. While there are mutual benefits combining science and tourism, does not mean that production joint expeditions seamless unproblematic. We apply a practice theory approach analyse practical organisational implications practices during two enactments, with seven-year's interval, Scientific Expedition Edgeøya Svalbard (SEES), organised The Netherlands. Our results demonstrate irregularly combinations different sets require higher levels adaptivity, communicability reflectivity be reproduced successfully.

Conducting fieldwork in polar regions presents a multifaceted challenge not only because of the remoteness environment, but also potential geopolitical disputes, language barriers, divergent national policies, and disparities emergency healthcare access. This review addresses climate crisis reevaluates ethical considerations alignment with broader social responsibilities, particular emphasis on challenges faced by Early Career Researchers (ECRs). Ongoing change its associated impacts effects (e.g., reduced snow ice cover, thawing permafrost, intensified fires, increased wildlife interactions) will undoubtedly compound aforementioned challenges. ECRs, often heightened awareness for contending issues pertaining to environmental conservation sustainability, face greater career stakes than tenured researchers, which can lead innovation addressing safety concerns regarding fieldwork. summarizes current ECRs fieldwork, elaborates how these may during this century, possible solutions. To address challenges, we propose comprehensive set recommendations, including innovative data collection methods using improved technology emphasizing meaningful remote local collaborations minimize travel impact risk disease contagion. We advocate reducing redundancy among research groups promoting sharing. Additionally, suggest enhancing cooperation integrating (traditional) Indigenous knowledge while respecting rights Arctic communities. Such recommendations highlight intricate dynamics logistics changing climate, need adaptability, inclusivity practices. A call action towards revising practices is clear, that be key agents forging establishing responsible, comprehensive, adaptive protocols toward safe successful sciences.

The continued growth of polar tourism is causing increasing concerns about its potential environmental effects, invigorating the current discourse tourism's role in sustainable future Polar Regions. These are often met with industry's narratives on purported positive impacts tourists who would become ambassadors, stewards or advocates. However, extent to, and ways which these three seemingly interchangeable ‘ambassador' terms have been used examined scientific literature largely unknown. To address this gap, we traced definitions identified 16 peer-reviewed studies that incorporated two types study design: (1) discussing context investigating relationship influential factors tourists' motivations, experiences, behavior intentions, behavior; (2) examining as ethical imperatives normative concepts. Results scoping review provides a clearer picture how “ambassador” defined utilized research, points to needs for further understanding, conceptualization, operationalization related concepts beyond focusing themselves ambassadors.
