Science–tourism intersections onboard Arctic expedition cruise ships: Reflective insights from a fieldwork at the geographic North Pole

In
August
2023,
we
both
embarked
on
an
icebreaker
cruise
ship
in
order
to
conduct
fieldwork
with
and
among
passengers
together
four
other
scientists.
Departing
from
Longyearbyen,
Svalbard,
this
two-week
ship-time
took
us
the
geographic
North
Pole,
across
Arctic
Ocean
sea
ice,
several
locations
northern
Svalbard.
While
vessels
operating
as
platforms
of
opportunity
for
researchers
are
not
new,
tourism
polar
regions
has
raised
ethical
sustainable
concerns
times
increasing
awareness
regarding
climate
change.

bringing
tourists
scientists
currently
objects
vivid
discussions
academia
media.
Drawing
our
experience,
aim
contribute
these
recent
debates.
Building
work
Lamers
et
al.
(2024),
argue
that
misunderstanding
concept
platform
can
lead
potentially
poor
data
collection,
scientists’
disappointment,
detrimental
reputation
science
actors.
We
carefully
selecting
research
projects
align
specificities
expedition
tourism,
facilitating
nighttime
effective
strategies
avoid
misunderstandings.

credibility

Polar
tourism

Conducting
fieldwork
in
polar
regions
presents
a
multifaceted
challenge
not
only
because
of
the
remoteness
environment,
but
also
potential
geopolitical
disputes,
language
barriers,
divergent
national
policies,
and
disparities
emergency
healthcare
access.
This
review
addresses
climate
crisis
reevaluates
ethical
considerations
alignment
with
broader
social
responsibilities,
particular
emphasis
on
challenges
faced
by
Early
Career
Researchers
(ECRs).
Ongoing
change
its
associated
impacts
effects
(e.g.,
reduced
snow
ice
cover,
thawing
permafrost,
intensified
fires,
increased
wildlife
interactions)
will
undoubtedly
compound
aforementioned
challenges.
ECRs,
often
heightened
awareness
for
contending
issues
pertaining
to
environmental
conservation
sustainability,
face
greater
career
stakes
than
tenured
researchers,
which
can
lead
innovation
addressing
safety
concerns
regarding
fieldwork.
summarizes
current
ECRs
fieldwork,
elaborates
how
these
may
during
this
century,
possible
solutions.
To
address
challenges,
we
propose
comprehensive
set
recommendations,
including
innovative
data
collection
methods
using
improved
technology
emphasizing
meaningful
remote
local
collaborations
minimize
travel
impact
risk
disease
contagion.
We
advocate
reducing
redundancy
among
research
groups
promoting
sharing.
Additionally,
suggest
enhancing
cooperation
integrating
(traditional)
Indigenous
knowledge
while
respecting
rights
Arctic
communities.
Such
recommendations
highlight
intricate
dynamics
logistics
changing
climate,
need
adaptability,
inclusivity
practices.
A
call
action
towards
revising
practices
is
clear,
that
be
key
agents
forging
establishing
responsible,
comprehensive,
adaptive
protocols
toward
safe
successful
sciences.

The
continued
growth
of
polar
tourism
is
causing
increasing
concerns
about
its
potential
environmental
effects,
invigorating
the
current
discourse
tourism's
role
in
sustainable
future
Polar
Regions.
These
are
often
met
with
industry's
narratives
on
purported
positive
impacts
tourists
who
would
become
ambassadors,
stewards
or
advocates.
However,
extent
to,
and
ways
which
these
three
seemingly
interchangeable
‘ambassador'
terms
have
been
used
examined
scientific
literature
largely
unknown.
To
address
this
gap,
we
traced
definitions
identified
16
peer-reviewed
studies
that
incorporated
two
types
study
design:
(1)
discussing
context
investigating
relationship
influential
factors
tourists'
motivations,
experiences,
behavior
intentions,
behavior;
(2)
examining
as
ethical
imperatives
normative
concepts.
Results
scoping
review
provides
a
clearer
picture
how
“ambassador”
defined
utilized
research,
points
to
needs
for
further
understanding,
conceptualization,
operationalization
related
concepts
beyond
focusing
themselves
ambassadors.
