Surface energy, as an intrinsic property of solids, plays a crucial role in modulating the characteristics solid surfaces, especially solid–liquid interface. Due to inevitable processes such surface adsorption or contamination, energy practical solids is usually nonuniform. However, if this nonuniformity rationally designed and effectively utilized, it capable endowing great potential for liquid manipulation. With rapid development microfabrication modification techniques, variety artificial patterned surfaces (PSESs) have been fabricated, which extend diversity, tunability, precision liquid-based applications. In review, we discuss regulation interface properties with PSESs from relatively macroscopic perspective, particularly focusing on how control matter through rational design. First, provide brief introduction about definition significance PSESs. Then, selective adhesion by summarized, including dynamics regulation, crystallization inducement, biosample self-distribution. following, regulate physical fields, thermal field, electric acoustic explanation centered discontinuous contact Finally, associated challenges scenarios are included.
