Abstract Purpose Life cycle assessment (LCA) provides a comprehensive methodology to evaluate the environmental impacts of products, processes, and services based on net flow energy, materials, emissions throughout their life cycle. This review focuses state LCA in water wastewater treatment Africa, aiming ascertain extent its implementation while synthesising existing challenges opportunities. Methods The articles were selected using systematic checklist standardised technique for assessing reporting reviews LCA. Strings keywords used search Web Science, Scopus, Google Scholar databases. Only original that assessed at least or process ISO 14040/14044 included. Case studies included carried out Africa. Results discussion A total 41 containing 131 scenarios found. Over 68% originated from South Africa Egypt, with notable absence representation Nigeria Tunisia. Urban was 41% studies, 37% covered industrial, 7% focused domestic. In total, 15% dedicated treatment. 32% all considered entire ReCiPe CML most popular impact methods. Biosolids nutrient recovery 23% 9% respectively. Global warming potential influential category, electricity generation fossil fuels major contributor adverse impacts. Conclusions emphasises need increased data acquisition storage, renewable energy use, material offset sectors. It highlights importance integrating into engineering design, engaging stakeholders LCA, establishing performance standards green innovations. Future research policy development promote sustainable practices are advocated.

ABSTRACT In addressing the complex challenges of sustainable development, Water‐Energy‐Food (WEF) nexus underscores critical role wastewater management. This study evaluates centralized and decentralized treatment systems using innovative Water‐Energy‐Food‐Economy‐Environment Nexus Index (WEFEENI). Centralized are traditionally favored in urban settings due to economies scale, yet they encounter high costs environmental impacts. contrast, offer flexibility lower operational costs, making them suitable for less populated regions. Our findings reveal that significantly reduce energy consumption by 72.88%, investment 52.01%, operating 87.98%, while also lowering greenhouse gas emissions. Although excel food production annual income, perform better water productivity, green space aquifer recharge. The highlights importance adopting a holistic approach, tailored specific contexts priorities, achieve
