Schiff base with a C═N bond is widely used in the fabrication of turn-on sensors for cations. The isomerization generally believed to induce dark state and quenches sensor's fluorescence. With aid time-dependent density functional theory (TDDFT), this contribution performs comprehensive investigation on photophysical process sensor Al3+. leads non-emissive twisted intramolecular charge transfer (TICT) state, which initiated by an early stage excited proton (ESIPT) process. However, has very large energy barrier low reaction rate that cannot effectively quench Interestingly, brand new TICT observed not induced but rotation neighboring C–C bond. Due barrier, can be attained easily opens up effective channel decays. This observation implies potential surface based should much more complicated than expected. The precise regulation of the electron-withdrawing/electron-donating strength in a probe is great significance for design reaction-based fluorescent probes with specific functionalities. Here, family excited-state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)-based fluorescence turn-on sensing properties toward KMnO4 was designed by precisely modulating electron-withdrawing substituents located at para-position recognition group. It found that −F, −CHO, and −H as groups bound can specifically recognize KMnO4, which ensures blue emission displayed reaction products. Especially −CHO group, product shows most stable fluorescence. 2-(benzo[d]oxazol-2-yl)-4-formylphenyl acrylate (BOPA-CHO) demonstrated more superior performance including low limit detection (LOD, 0.96 nM), rapid response (<3 s), rather good selectivity even presence 21 interferents. Moreover, practicality further verified test pen comprising BOPA-CHO-embedded sponge, capable detecting solid naked-eye LOD 11.62 ng. present modulation strategy would open up new path high-performance probes.

Abstract Excited‐state intramolecular proton transfer (ESIPT)‐based solid luminescent materials with multiple hydrogen bond acceptors (HBAs) remain unexplored. Herein, we introduced a family of Janus‐type ESIPT chromophores featuring distinctive (H‐bond) selectivity between competitive HBAs in single molecule. Our investigations showed that the central hydroxyl group preferentially forms H‐bonds imines imine‐modified 2‐hydroxyphenyl benzothiazole (HBT) but tethers moiety hydrazone‐modified HBT chromophores. Imine‐derived HBTs generally exhibit higher fluorescence efficiency, while hydrazone‐derived show reduced overlap absorption and bands. Quantum chemical calculations unveiled molecular origins biased their impact on process. This chromophore skeleton provides new opportunities for design materials.
