New RM734-like Fluid Ferroelectrics Enabled through Protecting Group Free Synthesis DOI Creative Commons

We report a novel synthetic procedure for making analogues of the widely studied ferroelectric nematogen RM734. Our new focuses on building materials starting from nitro-terminus and eschewing protecting groups, in contrast to previously reported syntheses. This approach confers two principal advantages: firstly, synthesis variants described herein is expedient, being single step as opposed three or more via classical route. Secondly, by forgoing use benzyl groups utilised original we can include functionality that incompatible with hydrogenolysis conditions (e.g. olefins, late halogens, unsaturated heterocycles). Several RM734-like exhibit nematic phases, rationalise behaviour these aid electronic structure calculations potential energy surface scans.

Abstract Manipulating light is an important area of optical research and development. To that end, tunable dichroic devices in which the reflectivity at differing wavelengths can be adjusted, are particularly valuable. This work motivated by recent studies properties chiral ferroelectric nematic liquid crystals (FNLCs). Here electro‐optical presented on two room temperature, FNLC materials demonstrate electrically when subject to a field below 0.2 V µm −1 . Moreover, under appropriate conditions, also (and reversibly) tuned (without change color) from 0% 40%. Reversible, low voltage mirrors, having miniscule power consumption operable around ambient temperature expected useful diverse applications ranging energy‐saving, smart windows virtual reality interfaces.

In soft matter, the polar orientational order of molecules can facilitate coexistence structural chirality and ferroelectricity. The ferroelectric nematic (NF) state, exhibited by achiral calamitic with large dipole moments, serves as an ideal model for emergence spontaneous chirality. This chiral ground state arises from a left- or right-handed twist polarization due to depolarization effects. contrast, smectic characterized lamellar structure lower symmetry, experiences significantly higher energy associated layer-twisting deformations formation domain walls, thus avoiding continuously twisted layered structure. this study, two types (BOE-NO2 DIOLT) are reported that possess different molecular structures but exhibit NF-ferroelectric phase sequence. It is demonstrated NF inherited in phases BOE-NO2, which features larger moments steric hindrance moiety, thereby triggering blocks.

Pd-decorated carbon nanotube (CNT) nanocomposites were added to a UV photopolymer resin be used as the ink in printing of three-dimensional (3D) structures.
