Abstract Self‐injurious behaviors (SIB) commonly occur in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and span diverse topographies of self‐inflicted ranging from head banging to hitting oneself against hard objects. Despite the high rates SIB autistic individuals, relatively little research has focused on psychological factors associated with development maintenance individuals moderate‐profound intellectual disability (ID). This commentary synthesizes existing literature highlights need for more correlates mechanisms ID. We highlight key role difficulties emotion regulation (ER) co‐occurring internalizing symptoms manifestation self‐harm clinical samples autism. Furthermore, this proposes a framework understanding interplay between poor ER Specifically, we explore emergence context precipitating cues that trigger strong emotions, processes strategy deployment, symptoms. Future directions implications longitudinal research, measurement development, treatments are discussed.
