ABSTRACT Background Self‐injurious behaviour (SIB) is a common problem among individuals with intellectual and developmental disabilities (IDDs) important impacts on quality of life. Although some evidence suggests that SIB may increase age, perhaps in curvilinear pattern, this primarily based cross‐sectional studies. Therefore, the purpose current study was to conduct prospective, longitudinal analysis age‐related changes high‐risk cohort children disabilities/delays. Methods A total 110 participants, between 2 12 years age at enrolment (70% male), were followed for 4 years. Caregivers completed RBS‐EC subscale annually, 317 assessments. The score, interference ratings endorsement specific topographies selected as dependent measures. Generalised linear models evaluating linear, quadratic cubic differences by disability (ID) status (no or mild ID vs. moderate profound ID) created each outcome. Results For scores, model suggested complex patterns varied degree ID. ratings, showed relatively high stable levels across ages, whereas no an increasing trend age. Patterns topographies. Discussion results suggest are vary Overall, concerning they indicate potentially frequency its impact daily activities approach adolescence, indicating need further work lifespan.

Additional research is needed to further explore the specific ways in which these types of behaviour impact individuals their families. Methods Caregivers seeking treatment for child's behavioural concerns completed an interview regarding negative related (a) physical harm self or others, (b) property damage, (c) structural modifications, (d) situational avoidance (e) reactive measures. We reviewed outcomes interviews report on prevalence various impacts this clinical sample. Some endorsed severe impacts, need emergency services (10.61%) residential placements (5.14%). Conclusions sample consistently resulting from concerns. This information crucial advocating additional high‐need population, used gather may be a helpful tool guide future work.

Abstract Self‐injurious behaviors (SIB) commonly occur in autism spectrum disorder (ASD) and span diverse topographies of self‐inflicted ranging from head banging to hitting oneself against hard objects. Despite the high rates SIB autistic individuals, relatively little research has focused on psychological factors associated with development maintenance individuals moderate‐profound intellectual disability (ID). This commentary synthesizes existing literature highlights need for more correlates mechanisms ID. We highlight key role difficulties emotion regulation (ER) co‐occurring internalizing symptoms manifestation self‐harm clinical samples autism. Furthermore, this proposes a framework understanding interplay between poor ER Specifically, we explore emergence context precipitating cues that trigger strong emotions, processes strategy deployment, symptoms. Future directions implications longitudinal research, measurement development, treatments are discussed.
