Ion-exchange membranes are crucial components in water electrolysis using polymer electrolyte membrane (PEMWE) for green hydrogen production. However, the impact of properties on device performance has not been adequately studied, and extent to which easily implementable strategies can improve remains unclear. This study investigates simple yet practical change PEMWE by examining how ion-exchange capacity cation exchange pretreatment (e.g., acid wash) catalyst-coated influence device-level performance, moving beyond traditional focus catalysts cell assembly. Our results show that increasing only decreases series resistance but also improves charge transfer at electrochemical reaction interface. Enhancing alone boost current-voltage characteristics without altering catalysts.
