Mediterranean
landscapes
are
shaped
by
natural
disturbances
such
as
herbivory
and
fire
that
regulate
vegetation
structure
fuel
loads.
As
a
result
of
the
cessation
traditional
agricultural
practices,
land
abandonment
is
widespread
phenomenon
in
these
landscapes,
leading
to
shrub
encroachment
heightened
hazard.
This
study
reports
effects
grazing
domestic
herbivores
on
transitional
woodland–shrubland
systems
across
three
case
areas
Portugal.
The
low
moderate
intensity
cattle
horses
were
assessed
strata—canopy,
shrubs,
grasses—using
indicators
evaluate
influence
both
horizontal
vertical
structure.
Moderate
reducing
grass
height
browsing
thinning
lower
branches,

discontinuity
between
understorey
canopy
layers.
