Mediterranean landscapes are shaped by natural disturbances such as herbivory and fire that regulate vegetation structure fuel loads. As a result of the cessation traditional agricultural practices, land abandonment is widespread phenomenon in these landscapes, leading to shrub encroachment heightened hazard. This study reports effects grazing domestic herbivores on transitional woodland–shrubland systems across three case areas Portugal. The low moderate intensity cattle horses were assessed strata—canopy, shrubs, grasses—using indicators evaluate influence both horizontal vertical structure. Moderate reducing grass height browsing thinning lower branches, creating discontinuity between understorey canopy layers. These continuity anticipated limit upward spread flames reduce potential for crown fires. In contrast, low-intensity showed limited work highlights using tool manage its contribution mitigating local wildfire hazards.

Forest certification is a voluntary conservation tool that aims to promote sustainable forest management. While research on has increased recently, there remains significant gap in understanding how and what extent can conservation. Mediterranean cork oak open woodlands are ecosystems of high socio-economic value. However, these threatened by adult mortality regeneration failure, often due inadequate management the rise pests diseases, aggravated climate change. prescribes practices intended enhance tree maintain stand health conditions. Therefore, it anticipated could mitigate observed decline trees regions. Here, we investigate whether contributes ecological sustainability Portugal. We compare biometrics non-certified certified stands before after implementation, using both National Inventory data field sampling from 2005 2020. Our findings indicate density decreased 16 % estates 28 between Similarly, cover declined 6 plots 19 during same period. Consequently, 2020, was 20 higher than ones, 36 stands. Tree diameter height at similar rates 2020.The age structure also remained consistent, showing bell-shaped distribution diameters years. results were inconclusive. suggest decline, measured changes slower woodlands. Nonetheless, increase shape potential issues stands, needing further measures address aging
