Abstract Extensive transformation of natural land cover into urbanized areas enhances accumulation phenotypic differences between animals from urban and nonurban populations, but there is little information on whether these changes, especially in terms animal behaviour circadian rhythm, have a genetic basis. The aim this study was to investigate background behavioural four pairs populations common waterbird, the Eurasian coot Fulica atra . For purpose, we quantified polymorphisms personality‐related candidate genes, previously reported be associated with avian rhythms traits that may crucial for life. We found general associations landscape urbanization level 3′UTR region CREB1 gene encoding transcriptional factor, which participates development cognitive functions regulation rhythm. also significant differentiation intronic CKIɛ responsible clock. Although lacked evidence linkage variation coding polymorphisms, significantly stronger at intron compared neutral microsatellite markers, suggesting possible local adaptations expression specific sites. Our results indicate effect habitat‐specific selective pressure resulting environment supporting microevolutionary scenario. These adaptations, however, prevailed non‐coding regulatory rather than regions showed either or patterns, revealing high complexity birds.
