Ecological and evolutionary processes are recognized as the main factors generating maintaining biodiversity. However, how biodiversity knowledge is collated, organized, distributed worldwide influences our perceptions inferences about underlying processes. We demonstrated that name-bearing type specimens (NBT), most fundamental reference for identity of any species, all freshwater brackish fish species in world mostly housed museums Global North countries. The unequal distribution NBT results from historical socioeconomic has implications both South For North, which concentrates NBT, we found a mismatch between their ichthyological collections native biotas. On other hand, countries with elsewhere face barrier advancing research due to difficulty accessing material, hampering global efforts cataloging, reviewing, describing new species. advocate if truly committed research, should pursue initiatives make biological fairer among countries, involves programs specimen repatriation facilitation accessibility material researchers they were collected.

Abstract Museum specimens document the impacts of interacting and increasingly pervasive environmental stressors on global biodiversity. Environmental, sampling, management records are needed to interpret causes these changes address collection biases; however, such data rarely available in museum catalogues. We outline a process join collections associated using science workflows tandem with community tools. Our approach is illustrated case study lake survey from Michigan that provide ecological context for catalogued fish specimens. Using web-based platform Zooniverse, we engage stakeholders, public, educational audiences. includes five key steps: archive assessment preparing images, workflow development, engagement transcription, curation, archiving. Integrating historical can clarify biodiversity over recent history refine our predictions future impacts.

Modeling population dynamics in response to various threats or potential management actions has become an increasingly common aspect of conservation programs for imperiled species. However, these models typically require a detailed understanding demographic processes that are often challenging quantitatively assess. The maned wolf (Chrysocyon brachyurus) is a South-American canid of which conservation guidelines have been implemented due to its population vulnerability. Its trophic ecology demonstrates an omnivorous and opportunistic diet, even flexibility in response anthropogenic disturbances. Among the food items identified, consumption reptiles scarce, includes snakes lizards. We monitored broad-snouted caiman (Caiman latirostris) nests during four nesting seasons through camera trapping, savannas grasslands areas, recorded wolves feeding on eggs periods drought. uncommon item, at low frequency, suggests that trapping could become complementary tool for studying dietary habits wolf. Caimans priority conservation, while are currently being released reintroduced order reverse their vulnerable status. This interaction must be long term, project integral strategies include both emblematic species.

Accurately assessing primate diets is important in studies of behavioral ecology and evolution. While previous research has compared sampling methods (scan, focal), we examined how schedule influences accuracy dietary measures. We define as the combined distribution (random vs. consecutive) frequency days within a given month. Under field conditions, time may be required to locate study group, therefore also subtracted 1, 2, or 3 h from beginning all non-consecutive each mimic observation lost search. From dense (near daily) 5-year record feeding behavior derived focal animal follows adult females five wild blue monkey (Cercopithecus mitis) groups, created data subsets matching various schedules, monthly measures calculated subset those based on full set. These included (1) proportion fruit, (2) diet composition (three top-ranked food items), (3) species richness plant diet, (4) Shannon-Wiener diversity index species, (5) Holmes-Pitelka expressing overlap with used generalized linear mixed models assess type (a combination hours lost) relate subset's deviation set, where smaller (or higher chance matching, for composition) implies greater accuracy. For measures, increasing increased The response varied among but types generally differed more at lower frequencies.
