Historical geology, climatic oscillations, and seed dispersal capabilities are thought to influence the population dynamics genetics of plants, especially for distribution-restricted threatened species. Investigating genetic resources within among taxa is a prerequisite conservation management. The Cycas taiwaniana complex consists six endangered species that endemic South China. In this study, we investigated relationship between phylogeographic history structure C. complex. To estimate complex, assessed divergence time, performed phylogenetic demographic historical analyses. Two chloroplast DNA intergenic regions (cpDNA), two single-copy nuclear genes (SCNGs), microsatellite loci (SSR) were sequenced 18 populations. SCNG data indicated high diversity populations, low significant differentiation Significant phylogeographical was detected. Structure analyses both revealed populations have main lineages, which estimated diverge in Middle Pleistocene. We propose fairylakea incorporated into szechuanensis other mainly located on Hainan Island, merged one lineage. Bayesian skyline plot experienced recent decline, suggesting probably bottleneck event. infer has been affected by Pleistocene climate shifts, sea-level human activities. addition providing new insights evolutionary legacy genus, characterizations will be useful

We conducted a comprehensive analysis of the functional traits leaves (leaflets) cycads. The aim this study was to clarify divergence between earlier origin Cycadaceae and later differentiated Zamiaceae, differences in trait associations cycads angiosperms. We selected 20 species 21 Zamiaceae from same cycad garden South China, measured their leaf structure, economic traits, mechanical resistance (Fp) water potential at turgor loss point (πtlp). In addition, we compiled dataset geographical distribution along with climatic variables for these species, some tropical-sub-tropical angiosperm woody literature comparison. The results showed significantly contrasting syndromes two families, exhibiting thicker leaves, higher carbon investments greater Fp than species. Leaf thickness (LT) πtlp were correlated mean native ranges, indicating evolutionary adaptation environmental conditions. Compared angiosperms, tougher, more tolerant desiccation. Greater associated structural investment both angiosperms cycads; however, lower given mass per area or LT angiosperms. Enhancement led negative but opposite trend observed cycads. Our reveal that variations are mainly influenced by taxonomy environment range. also demonstrate similar terms economics, different relationships regard mechanics drought tolerance This expands our understanding ecological strategies likely responses future climate change.

Cycas panzhihuaensis L. Zhou & S. Y. Yang (Cycadaceae) is an endangered gymnosperm species endemic to the dry-hot valley of Jinsha River basin in southwest China. Although wild C. population from Panzhihua Cycad Natural Reserve well protected and its genetic diversity has been assessed, characteristics populations outside nature reserve, which face larger risks extinction, remain unknown. Furthermore, genetics historical dynamics this have not examined across entire range. In study, analyze diversity, phylogeographical structure demographic history all seven known locations, we sequenced compared molecular data chloroplastic DNA (psbA-trnH, psbM-trnD, trnS-trnG), single-copy nuclear genes (PHYP, AC5, HSP70, AAT) 61 individuals, as 11 microsatellite loci (SSR) 102 individuals. We found relatively high within differentiation among panzhihuaensis, consistent with patterns other Asian inland cycads. no significant was detected, that small unprotected possess higher more unique haplotypes, revises our understanding deserves due attention. Analysis suggest human activity might be key threat panzhihuaensis. Based on characterization propose several practical guidelines for conservation species, especially sizes.

Abstract Assessing sampling biases caused by nonrandom specimen collecting is crucial in systematics, biogeography, and conservation. Nevertheless, research on the of vascular plants China remains limited. Here, we investigated status gymnosperms using 48 673 herbarium specimens representing 180 Chinese gymnosperm species. The spatial temporal patterns, collector determiner biases, phylogenetic taxon were studied to comprehend bias during 1900–2021. Meanwhile, assessed inventory completeness identify hotspots coldspots. results showed that predominantly inhabit mountainous areas China. historical can be divided into two distinct stages with four peaks activities. distribution collected or identified per individual displays significant skewness, has issues overcollecting undersampling. Inventory deficient, intensity weak both northern range 22°–25° N southern region (i.e., central Yunnan, Guangxi, eastern Guangdong). Additionally, observation reveals coldspots scattered across mountain regions, lacking clustering. This study revealed a highly polarized pattern for Consequently, recommend optimizing measures, targeted collecting, continuous dynamic monitoring future efforts. These recommendations hold relevance not only but also other land worldwide.
