Abstract Sperm cells are variable both within and among species. To be able to accurately measure sperm understand their function, it is important that preserved in a manner maintains structural integrity. Formalin widely used fixative storage medium for cells, but few studies have examined the effect of fixation long-term on morphological Ethanol also common agent tissue samples, here we examine if formalin or ethanol alters cell size We found no significant effects process fresh fixed ethanol. Further, there were consistent length changes stored over period 227 days, three years. A comparison across 13–14 years time showed small reduction 0.93%. Furthermore, initially remained quite stable dry glass slides minimum six months (we mean 0.18% after 6 months). The proportion with head damage was, however, much higher samples than those formalin. Overall, 70% had acrosome versus only 3% Finding intact measuring length, therefore, required greater effort samples. Our findings indicate use from study morphometrics justified either fixative, although clearly preserves better.

The aim is to get as many offspring possible from domestic songbirds during the breeding season. However, inadequacy of nest material used construction and individual abilities birds in directly affect success In this study, nests built by two groups female Gloster canaries using same were evaluated, effects on hatching rates fertile eggs development evaluated. For purpose, 8 used, 4 1st group (T-1) 2nd (T-2). Female showing estrus artificially inseminated, Group T-1 not intervened nests, T-2 construction, observed. It was concluded that more successful than group. may be obtain eliminating deficiencies observed a certain extent. study determine interventions made inseminated under equal conditions incubation process rate.

ABSTRACT Primary and secondary male sexual traits can influence the interspecific interactions of hybridizing populations, yielding fitness consequences either promoting or restricting gene flow. In this study, we evaluated relative two species tidal marsh endemics: saltmarsh ( Ammospiza caudacutus ) Nelson's sparrows A. nelsoni assessed effects condition competitive ability on resulting patterns paternity We compared reproductive success (number offspring sired) among saltmarsh, Nelson's, hybrid sparrow males n = 125) modeled in relation to measured pre‐copulatory (body size, fat scores, muscle scores) post‐copulatory (cloacal protuberance (CP) volume sperm length) across sites within center zone. found had higher levels skew fertilization than greater output both hybrids, suggesting competition may occur. Body size was best predictor success, independent genotypes, providing evidence for a role selection. also selection contributing hybridization, with CP length increasing number sired. Differential mean by hybridization has potential drive asymmetrical introgression; however, drivers differed between sites, level flow are context dependent not stable small sptatial scale mosaic Overall, few nearly equal backcrossing parental zone suggest mechanisms such as reinforcement exist limit minimize asymmetric introgression.

Abstract Sperm morphology varies considerably among species. traits may contribute to speciation if they diverge fast in allopatry and cause conspecific sperm precedence upon secondary contact. However, their role driving prezygotic isolation has been poorly investigated. Here we test the hypothesis that, early process, female promiscuity promotes a reduction overlap length distributions songbird populations. We assembled data set of 20 pairs populations with known distributions, published estimate divergence time, an index derived from extrapair paternity rates or relative testis size. found that diverged more rapidly promiscuous Faster between was caused by lower variance trait species, not faster mean lengths. The reduced is presumably due stronger stabilizing selection on mediated competition. If divergent optima causes sympatry, which remains be shown empirically, promote isolation, rapid songbirds.

In contrast to numerous studies on spermatozoa length, relatively little work focuses the width of spermatozoa, and particularly midpiece flagellum. flagellated flagellum provides forward thrust while energy may be provided via mitochondria in and/or through glycolysis along itself. Longer flagella able provide greater but also require stronger structural features more or larger supply sufficient energy. Here, we use scanning electron microscopy investigate ultrastructure from 55 passerine species 26 taxonomic families Passerides infraorder. Our data confirm qualitative observation that tapers its show longer are wider at neck. This pattern is similar mammals, likely reflects need for cells against shearing forces. We further estimate volume mitochondrial helix it correlates well with supporting length as a proxy volume, least between-species where highly variable. These results important context understanding evolutionary correlations among different sperm cell components dimensions.

Abstract The saltmarsh sparrow Ammospiza caudacuta and Nelson's A. nelsoni differ in ecological niche, mating behavior, plumage, but they hybridize where their breeding distributions overlap. In this advanced hybrid zone, past interbreeding current backcrossing result substantial genomic introgression both directions, although few hybrids are currently produced most locations. However, because species nonterritorial have only brief male–female interactions, it is difficult to determine what extent assortative explains the low frequency of offspring. Since females often copulate with multiple males, a role sperm as postcopulatory prezygotic barrier appears plausible. Here, we show that length differs between two among‐male variation consistent strong sexual selection on cells. We hypothesize divergence may constitute reproductive species, co‐evolves size specialized female storage tubules. Sperm does not appear act postzygotic barrier, from was unexceptional.
