The delimitation of African wintering areas the griffon vulture Gyps fulvus has been established on basis ring recoveries, usually from dead individuals and, to a lesser extent, by reading and wing marks in human-populated areas. After GPS-tracking several juvenile vultures central Spain, we show that female used an unknown trans-Saharan migratory route, spent five months flooded savannahs transition zone with Guinean forest ecoregion, moving between north-eastern Ivory Coast, northern Ghana southern Burkina Faso. This area represents extension hundred kilometres south southeast known range western European vultures. A field survey same dates recorded no this species but four other species. Future in-depth bio-logging studies are required evaluate migration patterns, connectivity various nuclei, its implications conservation Africa Europe.

Abstract Survival is a key demographic parameter for long‐lived bird species as it strongly influences their population dynamics and persistence. In recent decades, several studies have focused on unravelling differential patterns of survival by sex or age in populations, each group may be affected different ecological anthropogenic pressures. Vultures are highly threatened birds where age‐ especially sex‐dependent been understudied, therefore, obtaining robust estimates understanding which factors modulate them crucial developing management conservation strategies. Here, we used long‐term dataset (1990–2023) from wild colony griffon vultures Gyps fulvus central Spain capture‐mark‐recapture framework to address potential sex‐ age‐mediated apparent resighting. Resighting probabilities were lower individuals first year life than older individuals. Apparent increased with generally higher males females, particularly subadults. Disentangling whether an unequal between sexes due female‐biased dispersal true mortality necessary understand able implement adequate actions. Our research underlines the importance considering interactions analyses long‐lived, usually species.

Immature individuals move from their natal area to the where they settle and reproduce, this may take several years. This process is essential for long-lived species such as vultures condors, which spend long periods immature extensively. We studied movement behavior of 26 GPS-tagged Andean condors (Vultur gryphus) northwestern Patagonia throughout stage, analyzing whether these patterns differed according age, sex season. found that season age influenced home range size flight distances, warm being when most; were greater in sub-adults than juveniles. The effect was associated with individuals, males increasing more females. Our results provide first description how condor are affected by internal external factors. information could be key understanding responses environmental change threats at different stages during phase. Until now, conservation efforts have not considered areas used dispersing individuals. increase our ranging stage threatened bird, enabling us improve policies management strategies designed protect them.

Portugal is the habitat of three species vultures. According to IUCN Red List Threatened Species, Neophron percnopterus an Endangered species, Aegypius monachus nearly Threatened, and Gyps fulvus Least Concern. This study aims investigate admission causes, morbidity, outcomes vultures admitted a wildlife rehabilitation centre necropsy service in Northern Portugal. Over 17 years (2005-2022), 84 animals were admitted: 10 A. monachus, 69 G. fulvus, 5 N. percnopterus. The main causes 80% (n = 63) unknown cause, 13% 10) found debilitated, 6 % 5) vehicle collision, 4% 3) captivity, 1% 1) gunshot, electrocution. Most during summer (45.2%) autumn (36.9%). Analysis outcome data showed that 73% 58) arrived alive at could be rehabilitated released back into wild. Thirteen died treatment five dead. first time such lengthy results mortality has been carried out for these Although are limited, they can already provide some information about populations, particularly endangered so rare observe.

Abstract Natal dispersal is a critical trait for individual fitness and the viability, structure, genetic identity of populations. However, there pronounced information gap large long-lived species due to difficulty monitoring individuals at appropriate spatio-temporal scales. Here we study how traits social environmental characteristics influence natal decisions griffon vultures (Gyps fulvus) using long-term (30 years) number marked as nestlings in Spain. Our results show strong philopatry both sexes, with some recruiting breeders on same cliffs, even nests, where they were born. This philopatric tendency was modulated by effect conspecific density parameters emphasized importance attraction changes food availability that may have influenced increment colony size colonization new areas. Although further research needed considering smaller colonies more isolated population nuclei, our highlight studies understand factors determine their dynamics relationship anthropogenic activities, whose effects should be predicted managed conservation criteria.

Abstract There is a knowledge gap in the study of Argasidae soft ticks and pathogens they can transmit. These hematophagous arthropods are widely distributed often considered typical bird ectoparasites. Tick-parasitized birds act not only as reservoir but also carry these pathogen-infected to new areas. Seven griffon vulture nestlings were sampled northeastern Spain, collecting ( n = 28) from two individuals blood each 7). Blood samples vultures tested PCR positive for Flavivirus (7/7), Anaplasma (6/7), piroplasms (4/7), Rickettsia (1/7). A total 27 28 analyzed , 9/28 2/28 piroplasms, 5/28 Crimean-Congo Hemorrhagic fever virus (CCHFv). Sequencing phylogenetic analyses confirmed presence spp., Babesia ardeae zoonotic phagocytophilum B.
