Coral reefs can mitigate flood damages by providing protection to tropical coastal communities whose populations are dense, growing fast, and have predominantly lower-middle income. This study provides the first fine-scale, regionally modeled valuations of how risk reductions associated with hybrid coral reef restoration could benefit people, property, economic activity along Florida Puerto Rico’s 1005 kilometers reef-lined coasts. Restoration up 20% regions’ provide reduction benefits greater than costs. Reef habitats greatest shallow, nearshore, fronting low-lying, vulnerable communities, which often where impacts loss greatest. Minorities, children, elderly, those below poverty line receive more double hazard overall population, demonstrating that as a nature-based solution positive returns on investment economically socially most people.

The climate crisis poses a grave threat to numerous small island developing states (SIDS), intensifying risks from extreme weather events and sea level rise (SLR). This vulnerability heightens the dangers of coastal erosion, chronic water quality degradation, dwindling resources, demanding global attention. resultant loss ecological persistence, functional services, ecosystem resilience jeopardizes protection against wave action SLR, endangering habitats’ economic value, food security, infrastructure, livelihoods. Implementing integrated strategies is imperative. A thorough discussion available best management practices for restoration presented in context SIDS needs, threats, major constraints. Coastal resilience has become a pressing global issue due to the growing vulnerability of coastlines effects climate change. Nature-based solutions have emerged as promising approach coastal protection not only enhance resilience, but also restore critical ecosystems. Coral reef restoration potential provide ecosystem services benefits; however, there are still key uncertainties in linking design reductions flood hazard under current and future conditions. In this study, we applied one-dimensional two-dimensional numerical engineering models, calibrated validated using field data, evaluate effectiveness coral scenarios on waves, water levels, flooding along coast San Juan, Puerto Rico, U.S.A. Model results indicate small reduction maximum levels proposed scenarios. This underscores importance these endeavors, for ecological preservation preventing further deterioration. Such is essential mitigating increased risks anticipated future. Results from study information guide policymakers managers making informed decisions viable project options. By systematically evaluating how location impacts hazards, communities can develop implement proactive strategies mitigate flood-related risk. addition, by restoring reefs, contribute environmental while ensuring sustainable development environments.

Coastal ecosystems and the benefits they provide to people are at risk from a changing climate increasing human activities. Marine protected areas (MPAs) serve as widely used conservation tool, research on MPAs has recently expanded traditional focus ecological outcomes inclusion of ecosystem services. However, extent which quantitative assessment services informed MPA design management remains unclear. In this review, we aim understand literature societal coastal within MPAs. We find that only third papers quantify tend cultural provisioning while neglecting regulating health metrics. Furthermore, subset habitats (e.g., corals, mangroves) have received greatest attention. Studies rarely evaluate inform specific strategies or options for siting, monitoring, financing. Our results suggest comprehensively quantifying social-ecological relationships could help advance science practice, fostering resilience.

Coral reefs are effective natural barriers that protect adjacent coastal communities from hazards such as erosion and storm-induced flooding. However, the degradation of coral compromises their ability to against these hazards, making degraded a target for restoration. There have been limited field numerical modeling studies conducted understand how an increase in reef roughness, would occur due restoration, can affect wave energy dissipation range real-world water level conditions. Abstract Coral atoll islands, common in (sub)tropical oceans, consist of low‐lying accumulations carbonate sediment produced by fringing coral reef systems and are great socio‐economic ecological importance. Previous studies have predicted that many islands will become uninhabitable before the end this century due to sea level rise exacerbating wave‐driven flooding. However, assumption such morphologically static has been challenged observations modeling show potential for overwashing deposition maintain island freeboard. Reliable long‐term predictions change future flood risk, essential adaptation planning, are, however, lacking. Here, we adopt a novel, efficient approach response illustrate morphological an effect various measures. We demonstrate increases (beach) crest find morphology leads significant increase frequency flooding compared morphodynamically active islands. Reef measures were shown modify inshore wave energy, influencing equilibrium height therefore island, while beach restoration mainly delays island's response. Accounting natural dynamics, including morphodynamic feedback from measures, offers more realistic projections risk current model predictions. These local can serve as decision support tools climate adaptation.
