Abstract The agricultural use of silica (SiO 2 ) nanoparticles (NPs) has the potential to control insect pests while safety and tritrophic effects on plants beneficial natural enemies remains unknown. Here, we evaluate NPs with different feeding niches, enemies, a plant. Silica were applied at concentrations (75–425 mg/L) field-cultivated faba bean soybean for two growing seasons. pests, cowpea aphid Aphis craccivora American serpentine leafminer Liriomyza trifolii , pest, cotton leafworm Spodoptera littoralis monitored along their associated predators. Additional laboratory experiments performed test growth seedlings determine whether rove beetle Paederus fuscipes is attracted leafworm-infested treated NPs. In field experiments, reduced populations all three predators, including beetles, as concentration increased. fields, however, total number predators initially increased after applying lowest concentration. An olfactometer-based choice found that beetles more likely move towards an herbivore-infested plant than water-treated control, suggesting enhance attraction via herbivore-induced volatiles. laboratory, inhibited development roots 400 mg/L, they did not affect germination percentage, time, shoot length, or vigor index compared control.

Abstract The resource availability hypothesis predicts that plants adapted to infertile soils have high levels of anti‐herbivore leaf defences. This has been mostly explored for secondary metabolites such as phenolics, whereas it remains underexplored silica‐based We determined concentrations total phenols and silicon (Si) in growing along the 2‐million‐year Jurien Bay chronosequence, exhibiting an extreme gradient soil fertility. found nitrogen (N) limitation on young led a greater expression phenol‐based defences, old, phosphorus (P)‐impoverished favoured Both defence types were negatively correlated at community individual species level. Our results suggest trade‐off among these two strategies based strength type nutrient limitation, thereby opening up new perspectives plant research. study also highlights importance defences under low P supply.

Summary Leaf functional traits and their covariation underlie plant ecological adaptations along environmental gradients, but there is limited information on the global patterns of key leaf construction traits. To explore how co‐vary across diverse climate soil conditions, we compiled a dataset including cell wall mass per unit (CW ), carbon (C) calcium (Ca) concentrations, specific area (SLA) for 2348 angiosperm species from 340 sites world‐wide. Our results demonstrated negative correlations between C Ca concentrations SLA nongraminoid angiosperms. concentration increased with increasing mean annual temperature (MAT) precipitation (MAP) decreasing pH carbonate (CaCO 3 ) concentration, whereas exhibited opposite responses to these variables. The covariations Ca–C SLA–C were stronger in habitats lower MAT MAP, and/or higher CaCO content. This global‐scale analysis demonstrates that together govern biomass investment strategies leaves nongraminoids. We conclude conditions strongly shape patterns.

Success of plants largely depends on their ability to defend against herbivores. Since emergence the first voracious consumers, maintained adapting structures and chemistry escape from extinction. The constant pressure was further accelerated by adaptation herbivores plant defenses, which all together sparked rise a chemical empire comprised thousands specialized metabolites currently found in plants. Metabolic diversity kingdom is truly amazing, although many have already been identified, large number potentially useful chemicals remain unexplored bio-resources. Similarly, biosynthetic routes for involve enzymes, some still wait identification biochemical characterization. Moreover, regulatory mechanisms that control gene expression enzyme activities metabolism are scarcely known. Finally, understanding how defense exert toxicity and/or repellency remains limited typical examples, such as proteinase inhibitors, cyanogenic compounds nicotine. In this review, we attempt summarizing current status quo metabolic predominantly based survey ubiquitous examples interactions with chewing

Silicon (Si) is a beneficial mineral that enhances plant protection against abiotic and biotic stresses, including insect herbivores. Si increases mechanical biochemical defenses in variety of species. However, the use agriculture remains poorly adopted despite its widely documented benefits health. In this study, we tested effect supplementation on induction resistance chewing herbivore crops with differential ability to accumulate element. Our model system comprised generalist fall armyworm (FAW) Spodoptera frugiperda three economically important species uptake silicon: tomato (non-Si accumulator), soybean, maize (Si-accumulators). Silicon (Si) is a widely recognized element in plant defense, often enhancing resistance to herbivory by strengthening cell walls and deterring feeding external herbivores. However, its impact on internal, endophytic herbivores, such as gall-inducing insects, remains underexplored. This study investigates the role of silicon Bauhinia brevipes, focusing effects insects. We hypothesize that while strengthens tissues reduces it may have limited effect internal feeders, Our results indicate accumulation leaves significantly chewing insects but has no direct occurrence content galled was lower compared healthy leaves, suggesting manipulate distribution mitigate defensive effects. hypersensitivity reactions were positively influenced silicon, highlighting this localized defense mechanisms. findings reveal silicon’s tissue-specific roles emphasizing need for more research nuanced interactions with herbivores implications ecological applications. contributes literature multifaceted plant–herbivore potential applications sustainable pest management.
