Over the past decade, organic solar cells (OSCs) have made noticeable progress in photovoltaic performance thanks to emergence of electron acceptors capable intramolecular charge transfer, namely, nonfullerene small molecules. OSCs continue gain momentum by employing self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) as transport layers, particularly those involving conjugated system their functional groups and/or spacers. This review provides an overview SAMs, covering molecular designs, fabrication methods, and various functions OSCs. Additionally, it highlights currents issues surrounding along with efforts address them future perspectives.

Self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) have gained significant attention as an interfacial engineering strategy for perovskite solar cells (PSCs) due to their efficient charge transport ability and work function tunability. While solution-based methods such dip-coating spin-coating are widely used SAM deposition, challenges non-uniform coverage, solvent contamination, limited control over molecular orientation hinder scalability reproducibility. In contrast, vacuum deposition techniques, including thermal evaporation, overcome these limitations by enabling the formation of highly uniform materials with precise thickness arrangement. Importantly, chemical interactions between layers, coordination bonding Pb2+ ions, play important role in passivating surface defects, modulating energy levels, promoting crystallization. These not only enhance wettability but also improve overall quality stability films. This review highlights advantages vacuum-deposited SAMs, strong layers improving properties critical scalable applications.

High‐Efficiency Silicon Solar Cells with Chemical and Field‐Effect Passivation Using Novel 2PACz/MoOx Hole‐Selective Contacts DOI

Dopant-free crystalline silicon (c-Si) solar cells face critical challenges in hole transport layer (HTL) design, where conventional molybdenum oxide (MoOx) contacts suffer from interface oxidation and insufficient electron blocking. While self-assembled monolayers (SAMs) demonstrate potential organic photovoltaics, their application silicon-based HTLs remains unexplored. In this study, a novel SAM (2PACz) is proposed, phosphonic acid (PA) groups form strong coordination bonds with MoOx as HTL, aiming to improve cell performance via both chemical field-effect passivation. The incorporation of 2PACz raises the work function by 0.66 eV significantly improves minority carrier lifetime, which, turn increases built-in (Vbi) 1.06 V. These improvements contribute boost open-circuit voltage (Voc) short-circuit current (Jsc). Finally, 2PACz/MoOx-Au NPs-MoOx (MAM) stack achieves Voc 753.3 mV, Jsc 40.10 mA cm- 2, fill factor (FF) 79.12%, conversion efficiency (Eff) 23.90%. HTL enhances performance, offering strategy for optimization c-Si other optoelectronic devices.
