“In Minutes Instead of Weeks”: Discursive Constructions of Generative AI and Qualitative Data Analysis

The
use
of
qualitative
data
analysis
software
(QDAS)
platforms
have
always
posed
a
dilemma
for
researchers,
and
the
integration
generative
artificial
intelligence
(AI)
tools
are
complexifying
this
relationship
even
further.
way
QDAS
companies
positioning
new
development
will
impact
how
researchers
understand
what
is
it
could
be.
Using
discourse
methods,
we
explored
ATLAS.ti,
NVivo,
MAXQDA
websites
constructed
between
AI-assist
research
methods.
We
noted
four
“discursive
dilemmas”
across
websites:
(a)
automated
insight-generation
versus
systematic
meaning-making;
(b)
chatting
with
documents
analyzing
data;
(c)
high
speed
engagement;
(d)
novelty
agency.
While
some
level
hyperbolic
can
be
expected
from
corporations
whose
goal
to
sell
products,
argue
that
discourses
used
on
these
may
incompatible
epistemological
foundations
research.

Abstract
This
article
highlights
the
reflections
and
positionality
of
two
African
American
women
evaluators
who
have
unapologetically
integrated
their
professional
personal
identities
into
culturally
responsive
evaluation
(CRE)
scholarship
practice.
After
a
brief
overview
(CRE),
authors
describe
how
intersectionality
as
(among
other
identities)
inevitably
frame
evaluative
thinking
Subsequently,
they
critical
moments
in
CRE
journey
over
past
25
years,
particularly
illuminating
influence
Stafford
Hood.
They
conclude
with
vision
for
tool
to
help
reduce
inequalities
improve
lives
individuals
communities,
especially
those
often
marginalized
excluded.
