Abstract Policy‐makers and researchers are increasingly focused on the decarbonisation of clusters energy‐intensive industries. However, relatively little is known about trajectory different cluster initiatives. This paper aims to bring clarity an emerging field. It highlights evolving landscape industrial initiatives, growing importance clear definitions for effective communication knowledge exchange among stakeholders. Drawing insights from theory, it proposes a typology initiatives understand categorise types project. These four categories— ‘forerunner clusters’, ‘dispersed ‘classic clusters’ sites’—allow more understanding policy implications challenges associated with each type. To demonstrate application typology, presents profiles three that illustrate some dynamics involved. Through this work, we seek provide guidance future research development in transition towards low‐carbon future.

Industry is a crucial but extremely challenging sector to decarbonise. Global industrial emissions in 2020 accounted for 38% of total final energy use emissions, when feedstocks, furnaces, and ovens are included. The Industrial Decarbonisation Research Innovation Centre (IDRIC) has integrated expertise insights from various disciplines sectors real-world contexts enable the United Kingdom meet its net-zero targets. This paper draws methodologically research synthesis IDRIC funded projects outputs provide list ten crosscutting findings relevant policy practice. These cover thematic aspects as diverse efficiency, heat integration, hydrogen, carriers production utilisation, CCUS, negative technologies, systems accounting regulation. complexity decarbonisation demands an approach that fields, including science, engineering, policy, economics. Singular solutions/disciplinary boundaries or isolated efforts often insufficient address multifaceted challenges industries face reducing their zero by 2050.

Abstract Recent research underscores the importance of ensuring that net-zero pathways are perceived as legitimate and socially acceptable, public attitudes can trigger significant backlash. This article investigates narratives surrounding industrial decarbonization in UK within Twitter’s ‘digital town square.’ Intermediary agents play a crucial role shaping this discourse by fostering debate, offering specialized expertise, promoting specific technological narratives. Our contribution is twofold: first, we systematically analyze tweets from intermediary to identify key economic narratives; second, employ natural language processing demonstrate striking consistency between these perspectives incumbent industries central government. alignment suggests selection certain strategies both industry government may undermine social acceptability technologies associated infrastructure.
