Abstract This chapter provides an overview of the neurons and intrinsic extrinsic connections rodent, nonhuman primate, human hippocampal formation. While hippocampus related cortical regions have many same excitatory inhibitory as other regions, it also has at least a few neuron types, like mossy cell, that do not occur in areas. What is most distinctive about formation organization its connections, which are generally, though exclusively, unidirectional. there similarities features formation, substantive differences.

Brain region coordination in learning Gamma-frequency oscillations have been hypothesized as a physiological mechanism of interregional communication the brain. However, until now, all supporting data correlational and thus indirect. Fernández-Ruiz et al. examined gamma-frequency activity spike coupling between entorhinal cortex hippocampal dentate gyrus during after selective perturbation timing. They observed an integrated neuron, gamma-band, task-specific organization cortex–hippocampal circuits. These demonstrate that specific, projected oscillation patterns dynamically engage functionally related cell assemblies across brain regions manner. Science , this issue p. eabf3119

Abstract The Neuropsychology of Anxiety first appeared in 1982 as the volume Oxford Psychology Series, and it quickly established itself classic work on subject. It second edition (appearing 2000) have been cited at a steadily increasing rate passing 500/year 2017. field has continued to expand last quarter century necessitating this third edition. This completely updated revised (with many figures converted colour) retains original core concepts while expanding often simplifying details. includes new chapter prefrontal cortex, which integrates frontal hippocampal views anxiety an extensively modified personality providing basis for further developments Reinforcement Sensitivity Theory. book is essential postgraduate students researchers experimental psychology neuroscience, well all clinical psychologists psychiatrists.

We present here a view of the firing patterns hippocampal cells that is contrary, both functionally and anatomically, to conventional wisdom. argue hippocampus responds efference copies goals encoded elsewhere; it uses these detect resolve conflict or interference between in general. While can involve space, do not encode spatial (or other special types of) memory, as such. also transverse circuits operate an essentially homogeneous way along its length. The apparently different functions parts (e.g. memory retrieval versus anxiety) result from (situational/motivational) inputs on which those perform same fundamental computational operations. On this view, key role iterative adjustment, via Papez-like circuits, synaptic weights cell assemblies elsewhere.

The current model of the organization medial temporal lobe (MTL) episodic memory system assumes that two functionally different "where" and "what" pathways enter MTL as parallel parahippocampal cortex (PHC)-medial entorhinal (MEC) perirhinal (PER)-lateral (LEC) streams, respectively. With use tract tracing in vitro electrophysiological recordings, we show that, rat LEC, all main principal neuron types layer II receive convergent inputs from PER postrhinal (POR), homologous to PHC primates. Projections MEC POR are much less prominent than previously assumed. These findings thus challenge prevailing concept LEC defined by PHC/POR, Our point multimodal integrative structure whose unique set external sensory-derived allows its network represent a continuously fluctuating extrinsic environment.

Abstract The human hippocampus is involved in forming new memories: damage impairs memory. dual stream model suggests that object “what” representations from ventral temporal cortex project to the via perirhinal and then lateral entorhinal cortex, spatial “where” dorsal parietal parahippocampal gyrus medial cortex. can associate these inputs form episodic memories of what happened where. Diffusion tractography was used reveal direct connections hippocampal system areas humans.
