Indigenous frameworks suggest environmental risk and protective factors for American Indian (AI) children’s development can be understood in terms of connecting disconnecting forces five domains: spirituality, family, intergenerational ties, community, environment/land. This study examined the prevalence these among 156 urban AI parents their children (mean age = 10.69, SD 1.92) investigated associations with child executive function (EF). Parents reported on three (parent stressful life events, discrimination, neighborhood risks) two (knowledge tribal history engagement cultural beliefs traditional practices). rated EF using Behavior Rating Inventory Executive Function (BRIEF), a subsample (n 81) provided self-report data. Controlling income age, practices knowledge history) were associated higher parent-reported self-reported EF, while (discrimination risk) related to lower EF. Findings highlight role connectedness cognitive development, importance centering theory resilience research families.

Direct assessments of executive functions (EFs) are increasingly used in research and clinical settings, with a central assumption that they assess “universal” underlying skills. Their use is spreading globally, raising questions about the cultural appropriateness devised Western industrialized countries. We selectively reviewed multidisciplinary evidence theory to identify sets preferences may be at odds implicit assumptions EF assessments. These relate motivation compliance; expectations for interpersonal engagement; contextualized vs. academic thinking; notions speed time; willingness silly, incorrect, or do opposite; subject-matter familiarity. In each case, we discuss how preference incompatible assessments, future practice can address issue. Many discussed differ between interdependent independent cultures schooled unschooled populations. Adapting testing protocols these different contexts will important expanding our scientific understanding from narrow slice human population has participated date.

Serious games (SG) have emerged as promising tools for cognitive training and therapeutic interventions, especially enhancing executive functions. These demonstrated the potential to support individuals with diverse health conditions, including neurodevelopmental disorders, through engaging interactive experiences. However, a comprehensive understanding of effectiveness SG in functions is needed.

Problem solving encompasses the broad domain of human, goal-directed behaviors. Though we may attempt to measure problem using tightly controlled and decontextualized tasks, it is inextricably embedded in both reasoners’ experiences their contexts. Without situating solvers, contexts, our own experiential partialities as researchers, risk intertwining research information relevance with confirmatory biases about people, environments, ourselves. We review each these ecological facets solving, suggest a framework guide its measurement. ground this concrete examples ecologically valid, culturally relevant measurement solving.

Abstract The development of executive function (EF) has been linked to various life outcomes, motivating intense research on the topic. While much this focused more thoroughly understanding age‐related changes underlying neurocognitive mechanisms involved, recent theoretical and empirical works have stressed how immediate physical social context plays an important role in children engage control. Recent studies shown that experimenter is variable modulating EF. In article, I argue presence should be examined understand influence assessing EF children. However, examination not neglect fact others interactions with them likely shape long run, interindividual differences. Examining affect children's can implications, such as better reproducibility studies' findings conceptions.
