BACKGROUND A global-scale pandemic, such as the COVID-19 greatly impacted communities of color. Background: Emergency ambulance workers are at risk of poor mental wellbeing. Student paramedics in the UK attend placements, which expose them to same stresses; they also have their own stress factors. Coping Strategies of Minoritized Students in STEM Higher Education DOI Open Access

Abstract Previous research shows that the inherent systemic inequities present in STEM higher education impacts minority participation negatively as evidenced by phenomena like, low sense of belonging, isolation, self-efficacy, and attrition. Thus, minoritized populations (persons who identify Black, Latinx, Native Alaskan, Indigenous, or Asian Pacific Islander) have had to overcome many barriers education. In addressing this participation, some uses deficit frameworks assume students lack coping skills (for e.g., how balance work classes), these can be provided for them, example, through intervention programs. However, there is a general understanding regarding cope from an assets-based lens. HBCUs offer greater access to educational opportunities specifically for underrepresented students, while having a unique campus culture community. In the spring of 2020, coronavirus affected colleges universities immediately upon identification cases United States. transitioned online instruction also removing students from campus. For some attending HBCUs, this experience was challenging, as they were navigating personal family job losses, lack technology resources learning, increased mental health challenges. Black women in STEM graduate programs may develop coping strategies, such as identity shifting, to minimize gendered racial stressors, especially the context of COVID-19. Identity shifting is process altering one’s speech, behavior, perspective, and appearance. Past studies found a positive association between mental health outcomes among young women; however, research on limited. The present study utilized feminist standpoint theoretical framework examine daily experiences microaggressions (GRM), perceived supervisor support (PSS), 102 programs. Participants completed online questionnaires for 10 workdays using Qualtrics. We hypothesized that GRM would positively predict anxiety depressive symptoms. Additionally, we PSS significantly mediate relationship GRMs outcomes.
