We derive a one-dimensional macroscopic model for biofilm formation in porous medium reactor to investigate the role of longitudinal diffusion substrate and suspended bacteria on performance. By comparing an existing base model—one without diffusion, which was point departure our work, new model—we noticed significant changes system dynamics. Our results suggest that neglecting it can lead underestimation quenching length accumulation downstream, even advection-dominated regime. The effects attachment detachment degradation were also examined. In model, found has stronger influence depletion, becomes more pronounced as pore space increases.

Abstract The Monod model has been widely used in activated sludge and biofilm models to mathematically describe the kinetics of microbial growth. Mathematical biological systems can be distinguished according their dimensionality as zero‐dimensional (0D), one‐dimensional (1D), two‐dimensional (2D) three‐dimensional (3D). is a 0D model, which does not take cell (aggregate) structure into account, yet different ways modelling: In modelling, it its original sense (i.e. 0D), whilst dimensional intrinsic thus 1D, 2D 3D. We believe that latter correct use because both consist similar aggregates feature concentration gradients. Diffusional mass transfer limitations are manifested by values kinetic parameters should described explicitly Fick's laws diffusion. concept adopted state‐of‐the‐art more recently models. Measured directly transferred application second law diffusion combination with reaction–diffusion equation) therefore becomes irrelevant. this manner, equation simple, universal approach modelling contains variable parameters. © 2022 Society Chemical Industry (SCI).
