Osteoarthritis (OA) is the most prevalent joint disease in elderly population and its substantial morbidity disability impose a heavy economic burden on patients society. Knee osteoarthritis (KOA) common subtype of OA, which characterized by damage to progressive articular cartilage, synovitis, subchondral bone sclerosis. Most current treatments for OA are palliative, primarily aim at symptom management, do not prevent progression or restore degraded cartilage. The activation α-granules platelets releases various growth factors that involved multiple stages tissue repair, suggesting potential modification. In recent years, platelet-based therapies, such as platelet-rich plasma, fibrin, platelet lysates, have emerged promising regenerative KOA, but their related effects mechanisms still unclear. Therefore, this review aims summarize biological characteristics functions platelets, classify products therapy preparation methods. Moreover, we basic research regeneration strategies KOA discuss cellular molecular mechanisms. Further, describe general clinical application treatment results meta-analysis randomized controlled trials.
