Abstract No tillage (NT) has been proposed as a practice to reduce the adverse effects of on contaminant (e.g., sediment and nutrient) losses waterways. Nonetheless, previous reports impacts NT nitrate () leaching are inconsistent. A global meta‐analysis was conducted test hypothesis that response under NT, relative tillage, is associated with type (inversion vs non‐inversion tillage), soil properties organic carbon [SOC]), climate factors (i.e., water input), management practices duration nitrogen fertilizer inputs). Overall, compared all forms combined, had 4% 14% greater area‐scaled yield‐scaled losses, respectively. The tended be 7% than inversion but comparable tillage. Greater most evident short‐duration (<5 years), where inputs were low (<2 mm day −1 ), in medium texture SOC (<1%) soils, at both higher (>200 kg ha ) lower (0–100 rates addition. Of these, important factor affecting risk NO 3 − Globally, average, amount leached mainly attributed corresponding increases drainage. percentage cropping land increased from years (31%) 15 (54%). This study highlighted benefits adoption for mitigating likely long‐term systems high‐SOC soils.
