The
density
of

side
chain
introduced

functions

packing
structure
at
an
interface
poly(substituted
methylene)
where
azobenzene
is
every
carbon
atom
in
(C1PAz).

compared
with
those
conventional
vinyl
[poly(methacrylate)]
possessing
identical
side-chain
(C2PAz).
bulk
state
analyzed
by
X-ray
measurements
revealed
that
C1PAz
adopts
highly
ordered
rectangular
unit
cell
structure,
whereas
C2PAz
shows
less
lamellar
one.
Langmuir
film
balance
experiments
indicated
both
polymers
trans-azobenzene
give
essentially
2D
occupying
area
water,
which
agrees
well
smectic
B
(hexatic
packing)
model
based
data.
Upon
transfer
onto
solid
substrate,
only
conformational
transformation
spread
bilayer-type
layer,
most
probably
due
frustration
stemming
from
crowding
chains.

Abstract
This
study
focuses
on
the
helical
conformation
of
main
chain
syndiotactic
poly(substituted
methylene)s
with
4‐cyanobiphenyl
(CB)
moieties
incorporated
at
ends
alkyloxycarbonyl
side
chains.
The
polymers
are
designated
as
PCB
n
,
where
is
number
methylene
units
in
spacer
between
and
CB.
PCB6
PCB8
assemble
chains
into
layers
without
positional
order
within
layers.
Meanwhile,
PCB10
PCB12
a
short‐range
order.
Each
CB
moiety
end
bonded
to
carbon
atom,
which
arranged
along
contour,
its
position
correlates
that
atom.
As
temperature
increases,
undergoes
phase
transition,
losing
layer,
alters
conformation.
Consequently,
positions
side‐chain
affect
chain.
In
contrast,
maintains
when
undergoing
transition
similar
PCB10.
longer
allows
adopt
helix
conformation,
independent
moieties.
