ABSTRACT
Objective
Eating
disorders
(ED)
typically
emerge
in
adolescence,
a
critical
period
for
brain
development
and
peer
bonding.
Interpersonal
difficulties—particularly
social
anxiety—frequently
co‐occur
with
ED.
Oxytocin
is
neuropeptide
that
modulates
cognition
linked
to
prosocial
effects.
To
date,
no
study
has
investigated
oxytocin's
effects
on
negative
interpretation
bias
toward
ambiguous
information
adolescents
Methods
Forty‐eight
female
aged
16
17
years
without
EDs
took
part
placebo‐controlled,
double‐blinded,
randomised,
crossover
trial
investigating
the
of
24
IU
intranasal
oxytocin
interpretations
scenarios.
Participants
controls
were
tested
twice,
approximately
one
week
apart.
Results
Contrary
hypothesis,
increased
overall
(
p
=
0.019,
large
effect).
Adolescent
females
AN
or
BN
made
more
than
when
presented
information.
There
was
group
effect

concepts

cognitive

representing

stage
in
continuum.
When
individuals
encounter
information
or
situations
characterized
by
ambiguity
and
unclear
meanings,
some
tend
to
attribute
positive
interpretations
them
(positive
interpretation
bias),
while
others
exhibit
tendencies
towards
assigning
neutral
negative
(negative
bias).
This
paper
delineates
concept
its
associated
research
materials,
paradigms,
pertinent
studies.
Future
endeavors
should
devote
greater
attention
elucidating
distinctive
characteristics
internal
mechanisms
across
diverse
demographic
groups.
