Maize is a major cereal crop worldwide, and its stable production essential for national global food security. Pests are among the key factors affecting yield quality of maize. Therefore, it crucial to evaluate recovery losses after implementing control measures against pests during different periods. In this study, we investigated population dynamics main maize in South China assessed treated with effective these The results showed that fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda, was most severe pest autumn There 10.02% decrease ear weight when no were taken at fourth-leaf stage, there 80.45% 76.09% increases damage index tasseling blister stages, respectively. Additionally, tannin content kernels increased by 26.28% throughout entire growing period. These findings will increase farmers’ knowledge regarding detrimental effects FAW provide theoretical basis reasonable timely pests.

Spodopotera frugiperda is a worldwide invasive pest that has caused significant economic damage. According to the classical biological control approach, natural enemies can pests come from same area of origin as have experienced coadaptation processes. Spodoptera frugiperda (Lepidoptera: Noctuidae) and Tenebrio molitor (Coleoptera: Tenebrionidae) are two prominent pests of maize its stored grains, respectively. Botanical pesticides have been proposed as an alternative for their management. This study evaluated the insecticidal activity Salvia connivens (Lamiaceae) methanolic extract rosmarinic acid against S. T. by adding them to artificial diet, well ecotoxicological effects on Poecilia reticulata (Cyprinodontiformes: Poeciliidae) Danio rerio (Cypriniformes: Danionidae) through acute toxicity tests. The showed higher mortality (LC50 = 874.28 ppm) than 1856.94 was non-toxic fish. Rosmarinic acid, most abundant compound in (80.45 mg g-1), 176.81 ppm). did not cause a toxic effect adult P. at tested concentrations. However, fingerlings D. adults, it non-toxic, except embryos, where slightly toxic. These findings suggest that has potential botanical product management with low impact, while may be useful frugiperda.

Abstract BACKGROUND Vegetative insecticidal proteins (Vip3) from Bacillus thuringiensis (Bt) have been utilized for control of lepidopteran insect pests. The majority known Vip3 possess exceptional high toxicity against Noctuid insects such as the fall armyworm (FAW, Spodoptera frugiperda ), beet (BAW, exigua ) and cotton bollworm (CBW, Helicoverpa armigera but generally relatively low or even no activity some very important pest insects, Asian corn borer (ACB, Ostrinia furnacalis European (ECB, nubilalis rice stem (RSB, Chilo suppressalis oriental (OAW, Mythimna separata ). RESULTS Here, we report mutant Vip3Af with a single amino acid mutation, Vip3Af‐T686R, which gains significantly higher ACB, OAW BAW, while retaining FAW, CBW RSB. Protein proteolytic activation in vitro showed that efficiency protein was greater than wild‐type midgut juice BAW. Transgenic expressing this levels resistance to OAW, BAW CBW. CONCLUSION Our results suggest may be superior Vip3A development transgenic crops broad range species. © 2024 Society Chemical Industry.

Abstract Interspecific competition is an important factor in the population dynamics and geographical distribution of insect populations. Fall armyworm (FAW), Spodoptera frugiperda , invasive species, Asian corn borer (ACB), Ostrinia furnacalis a native pest species are major pests on maize China, posing threat to yield grain quality. A series laboratory, greenhouse, field experiments were conducted elucidate competitive interactions between FAW ACB. In laboratory experiments, exhibited aggressive behaviors more frequently when compared with ACB, while latter defense frequently. Higher intraspecific was recorded conspecific rather than particularly 6th larval stage. had higher interspecific advantage through intraguild predation over resulting partial or complete displacement ACB initially ratio 2 1 : 1. The also significantly influenced parameters, defensive enzymes, nutrient these species. Competitive interaction proved that response superoxide, catalase, soluble protein increased, whereas total sugar content both substantially decreased. Survival rate, plant damage co‐infested by varied among sequential combinations under greenhouse conditions. consistently stronger aggression conditions co‐existing same feeding guild. These findings contribute efforts toward improvement integrated management programs for FAW, decision making pests’ strategies reduce high risks outbreaks.

The invasive fall armyworm Spodoptera frugiperda (J. E. Smith) invaded Asia in 2018, colonizing the tropical and southern subtropical regions as well migrating with monsoons into Northeast during spring summer. This has resulted widespread infestations, significant impacts on maize production various Asian countries. Previous studies have shown that invasion of this pest can alter species relationships pests, but actual impact management is still unclear. study investigated changes occurrence pesticide use annual breeding areas S. Yunnan Province Guangxi Zhuang Autonomous Region China 2017-2021, based surveys interviews small farmers production. results showed emerged dominant among pests after colonization, replacing traditional such Ostrinia furnacalis, litura, Agrotis ypsilon, Rhopalosiphum maidis. variety pesticides used for control changed from Chlorpyrifos, Lambda-cyhalothrin, Acetamiprid to Emamectin benzoate-based high effectiveness against frugiperda. Furthermore, frequency chemical applications increased an average 5.88 7.21 times per season, amounts summer autumn being significantly higher than winter maize, thereby increasing application costs by more 35%. clarified community succession south China, providing a baseline modifying regional strategies relatively new pest.
