Far fewer people migrate than global disparities in wealth and well-being would lead us to predict, yet we know relatively little about why those who presumably have much gain from migration prefer stay place. This article examines the motivations of young express preference put, asks what individual household characteristics are associated with voluntary immobility. Using survey data collected Ethiopia, India, Vietnam for Young Lives Project, find that majority surveyed envision a future within their home country, between 32 per cent (Ethiopia) 60 (Vietnam) current location. By presenting a range of outcomes which result from the impacts changing environment on human mobility patterns, Foresight Report Migration and Global Environmental Change emphasized that, whereas some people choose to stay in specific location, others are simply unable leave, leading what report termed “trapped populations”. Abstract Internal migration research is paying increasing attention to the role in behaviour of having non‐resident family—family living outside household—living close by, and also non‐migration staying general. Combining these two themes, this paper investigates family ties rural for adults aged 31–64. Using a mixed methods analysis survey interview data from Netherlands, Germany Northern Ireland (UK), we examine if presence nearby relates future intentions stay region, explore meanings different relations how they relate past ongoing behaviours. Our findings reveal that near children in‐laws increases likelihood intention region rest one's lifetime. While quantitative analyses suggest parents area does not contribute intentions, interviews revealed parents' residential proximity was integral original decision. Non‐resident members provide emotional instrumental support, offer location‐specific structural opportunities, sense security. Partly, obligations play staying, yet stayers are ‘stuck place’ because ties, but rather an implicit way, intertwined with senses belonging attachment.

There is growing interest from both policy and academic communities in understanding why people do not migrate. This article offers the first global analysis of aspiration to stay, defined here as preference stay one's country residence. We make use unique Gallup World Polls which provide information on aspirations (as opposed migrating abroad) well individual characteristics opinions for 130 countries worldwide between 2010 2016. find staying are far more common than migration across globe uncover important “retain factors” often overlooked research drivers — related social ties, local amenities, trust community institutions, life satisfaction. In order to broaden research into different forms of immobility, this article explores how immobility can be motivated by a sense duty stay using data collected from residents São Paulo, Brazil who had decided not emigrate despite having the capability do so. Abstract This article explores the factors and mechanisms that underpin aspirations to stay in situations where migration could be beneficial. To do so, this proposes a spatial–temporal comparative framework explains through notion of relative endowment, which reveals positive assessment what people have, despite awareness social inequalities. Empirically, focuses on rural town northern Brazil has experienced stagnating economy since 1990s, young adults express stay. While climate change may amplify global mobility patterns, most affected individuals voluntarily stay in their locales. This research studies the multiple forms of voluntary non-migration amidst socio-environmental challenges, focusing on traditional fishermen community southwestern Bangladesh.
