High concentrations of harmful metal(loid)s and extreme acidity are persistent environmental concerns in acidic pit lakes. In this study, we examine Cueva de la Mora (CM), a meromictic lake the Iberian Pyrite Belt, Spain, as model system. Our research aims to explore potential bioremediation strategies mitigate impacts such environments. The major strategy applied is biologically stimulate sulfate reduction (i.e., biosulfidogenesis) deep layer promote formation low-solubility sulfide minerals. Previous omics-based studies CM have shown that several sulfate-reducing bacteria (SRB) taxa present layer. However, their activities likely limited by availability electron donors for production. Therefore, different amendments (glycerol, elemental sulfur, glycerol + sulfur) were tested production enrich acid-tolerant sulfide-producing microbes. results showed stimulated dissimilatory much faster than sulfur alone, suggesting donor limitations control Furthermore, combined addition (S(0)) resulted highest level This indicates S(0) can play significant role an acceptor further promoting when suitable present. Abstract Lakes are closely linked to human communities and offer a variety array of ecosystem services. In the context climate change, increased activities have disturbed supply–demand balance key services in lakes, making them increasingly vulnerable social–ecological risks. However, previous studies not adequately explored risks challenges faced by lake ecosystem. The purpose this study is explain current status trade‐offs between pairs lakes investigate main associated with these pairs. Our findings reveal that crop production water purification services, freshwater provision flood regulation as well aquatic habitat maintenance three principal ecosystems. exacerbation among creates major ecosystems, is, eutrophication, flooding biodiversity loss. order address achieve sustainability basins, systematic framework for managing must be established. A study was conducted concerning the perceptions of a future reservoir (4.7–8.9 square kilometres, 42.2 million cubic metres) by residents, tourists, and visitors; location in question former Kotlarnia sand pit catchment area Bierawka River (tributary Oder southern Poland). Divergent concepts for reclamation development emerged; construction initially dominant option but eventually abandoned despite it having greatest acceptance among respondents (out 134 respondents, 43.3% favoured creation water reservoir, 29.9% introducing nature protection arrangements to enable spontaneous regeneration, 16.4% reforestation). clear discrepancy arose between public’s expectations related order create official position land user administrator potential which indicated that no longer intended such reservoir. ABSTRACT Accurately and efficiently identifying the vegetation disturbance ranges in surface coal mines is of great significance for determining scope land degradation mitigating degradation. The objective this article to propose an automated method on based fitting NDVI spatial trajectory (called Disran_SpaTFit). process proposed includes preparing dataset, designing curve conceptual function model, trajectory, selecting optimal model identify ranges. With Shendong base China as study area, mining 106 were automatically identified. results show that: (1) accuracy identification distances was 91.1%, with a mean absolute error 109 m. (2) Disran_SpaTFit widely applicable various heterogeneous mines. 96.62% trajectories (1229 out 1272 total) confirmed match one four models designed Disran_SpaTFit. (3) exhibit significant heterogeneity across different directions extend certain distance away from open‐cut area. (4) able accurately disturbances years, covering changes before during activities. demonstrate that provides effective tool mines, which importance ecological assessment restoration management areas.

Abstract The article presents research results on the physicochemical properties of water and species composition plants in ecological site Glinianki, protecting a small pit lake Kielce (SE Poland). level quality changed seasonally due to inflow snowmelt from adjacent episodic pools, which are rich calcium, sulphates, nitrates. Despite high precipitation sums summer, decreased increased evaporation. floral list Glinianki contains 37 species, mainly shoreline, emergent reed beds, sedge beds submerged rooted plants. Among taxa found site, there included national regional red lists, such as Greater Bladderwort Utricularia vulgaris , Eurasian Watermilfoil Myriophyllum spicatum Whorl-leaf verticillatum. Although located city, catchment is not yet urbanised, it should be protected preserve site.

Abstract As our crowded and warming world continues moving away from fossil fuels such as coal, we are increasingly attempting to transform the landscapes damaged by mining into beneficial, appealing valuable new uses. The post-mining transformation involves many dilemmas, often arouses land use conflicts can reproduce environmental injustices. In background of diverging preferences for uses perspective various stakeholders. This paper examines key issues dilemmas in transformation, including terminological inconsistencies, technical reclamation versus natural succession, heritage preservation choices, authenticity concerns, success criteria issues. underlying question ask is: What is future coal energy landscape; that is, what should or could come next? To address this question, provide a comprehensive literature review an analysis sample 28 case studies good practice projects regeneration (i. e., recycling) Czech Republic. study distinctive its scope, analyzing diverse range recycling surface urban brownfields, with extensive findings.
