Like many other aquatic animals, freshwater planarians have also become partners of symbiotic ciliates from the class Oligohymenophorea. In present study, we explored hidden diversity and addressed questionable systematic position mouthless obligatory gut endosymbionts planarians, using nuclear mitochondrial SSU rRNA genes. Although all isolated morphologically corresponded to a single species, molecular analyses suggested existence three genetically distinct entities: Haptophrya planariarum, dugesiarum nov. spec., schmidtearum spec. The two former species share same planarian host, which indicates speciation model involving one duplication event without host switching. Such diversification pattern was recognized in astome inhabiting megascolecid glossoscolecid earthworms. multi-gene phylogenies along with secondary structure 16S molecule, however, challenge traditional classification within subclass Astomatia. very likely evolved an orphan scuticociliate lineage by loss oral apparatus transformation thigmotactic field into adhesive sucker. Since astomy multiple times independently Oligohymenophorea, cell mouth cannot be used as sole argument for assignment Astomatia anymore.

Abstract Freshwater planarians of the genus Girardia have been introduced all over world, but little is known about species involved and their possible impact on autochthonous ecosystems. Using molecular phylogenetics niche modelling under different climatic scenarios we examine human-induced spread alien from original areas distribution in Americas to other areas. Our results corroborate that populations spreading worldwide belong three species: G. dorotocephala , sinensis tigrina . study emphasizes native North America shows has a broader range localities than previously known. Niche revealed broad potential extensive regions Northern Hemisphere. Regardless future scenario, distributional will increase towards northern Europe, without diminishing high suitability south. Their environmental requirements, being generalists with for human-modified habitats, fissiparous reproduction explain successful colonization. In Iberian Peninsula, suitability, overlapping more limited suitable planarians, pointing detrimental effects invaders.

Animal behavior emerges from collective dynamics of interconnected neurons, making it vulnerable to connectome damage. Paradoxically, many organisms maintain significant behavioral output after large-scale neural injury. Molecular underpinnings this extreme robustness remain largely unknown. Here, we develop a quantitative analysis pipeline measure previously uncharacterized long-lasting latent memory states in planarian flatworms during whole-brain regeneration. By combining >20,000 animal trials with population dynamic modeling, show that long-range volumetric peptidergic signals allow the rapidly reestablish and restore coarse large structural perturbations nervous system, while small-molecule neuromodulators gradually refine precision. The different time length scales neuropeptide transmission generate incoherent patterns activity which competitively regulate memory. Controlling through opposing communication mechanisms creates more robust system than either alone may serve as generic approach construct networks.
