Many of the world's natural resources are in a state crisis. The solution to this crisis is develop effective management institutions, but there no consensus on what those institutions are. Some economists favor solving resource-management problems through institution private property; others advocate central government control; and many anthropologists see local-level as solution. In review, I argue that all these governance structures fail under certain conditions. However, factors contributing failure each institutional forms differ radically, causes not always predicted basis existing theory. This chapter contains review literature identified causing private-property regimes, government-controlled resources, management. We will have learn match resource with specific techniques if we manage effectively. also understand complex biosocial influencing sustainability.

Ethnobiology is increasingly recognized from within and outside of its boundaries as interdisciplinary. The Society defines the field "the scientific study dynamic relationships among peoples, biota, environments." Ethnobiologists are able to skillfully assess challenges biocultural conservation across divides political ecology. They situated mediate between programs that target biodiversity preservation with little concern for needs human communities, those (such New Conservation movement) privilege needs. also transcends pervasive assumption in these fields Western knowledge economic goals should guide change. Because ethnobiology's importance a bridging discipline, it important ask what unifies ethnobiology. Is common subject matter? Or, there an underlying emphasis representing "ethnobiological perspective?" Answers questions explored here using content analysis discourse-and-ideology analysis. We use results identify unique roles ethnobiologists play conservation. This proved useful systematic identification four salient themes unify ethnobiology—ethics ethnobiology, shared environmental cultural heritage, interdisciplinary science non-science, ecological understanding. Increases in gross domestic product (GDP) beyond a threshold of basic needs do not lead to further increases well-being. An explanation is that material consumption (MC) also results negative health externalities. We assess how these externalities influence six factors critical for well-being: (i) healthy food; (ii) active body; (iii) mind; (iv) community links; (v) contact with nature; and (vi) attachment possessions. If environmentally sustainable (ESC) were increasingly substituted MC, thus improving well-being stocks natural social capital, behaviours involving non-material (SBs-NMC) became more prevalent, then would increase regardless levels GDP. In the UK, individualised annual costs (NCEs) currently amount £62 billion National Health Service, £184 economy (for mental ill-health, dementia, obesity, physical inactivity, diabetes, loneliness cardiovascular disease). A dividend available if substitution by ESC SBs-NMC could limit prevalence conditions.
