The transition to parenthood is perhaps the only time in adult life when brain changes such a significant degree short period, particularly birthing parents. It also there an increased risk of developing mental illness, which may be due, part, neuroplasticity. Thus, we must develop interventions and treatments that support parents promote parental health. This review will highlight key findings from current research on how human structure function are modified with 1) parenthood, 2) parenting stress perinatal 3) aimed at promoting focus mothers, but non-birthing discussed. Improvements our understanding brain, health well-being generations come.

Pregnancy is a period of profound biological transformation. However, we know remarkably little about pregnancy-related brain changes. To address this gap, chart longitudinal changes in structure during pregnancy and explore potential mechanisms driving these Ten participants (Mean age = 28.97 years) are assessed 1-6 times (median 3) their pregnancy. Each visit includes anatomical diffusion-weighted MRI, assessments waking salivary hormones, hair inflammatory cytokines. Here observe reduction gray matter volume gestational week, while neurite density index (NDI), proxy axon density, white tracts increase across Progesterone levels associated with reductions volumetric measurements, both progesterone estradiol linked to increases NDI tracts. This study highlights the neurobiological experienced by pregnant individuals provides insights into neuroplasticity adulthood.

“Mom brain” is a commonly reported phenomenon in pregnant and postpartum women characterized by brain fog, forgetfulness, distractibility, other cognitive disruptions. However, research on objective functioning inconclusive does not necessarily align with mothers’ subjective experiences mom brain. This review discusses recent developments the perinatal neuroscience literature that support revised narrative which “mom conceptualized as period of functionally adaptive enhancements. Changing can shift societal expectations for mothers, thereby reducing social pressure negative self-evaluation to ultimately enhance across period.
