As integral parts of fuel cells, polymer electrolyte membranes (PEM) facilitate the conversion hydrogen's chemical energy into electricity and water. Unfortunately, commercial PEMs are associated with high costs, limited durability, variable electrochemical performance based on perfluorinated polymers that persist in environment. Nanocellulose-based have emerged as alternative options given their renewability, thermal mechanical stability, low-cost, hydrophilicity. These take advantage anionic nature most nanocelluloses, well facile modification conductive functional groups, for instance, to endow ionic electron conductivity. Herein, we incorporated first time two nanocellulose types, TEMPO-oxidized sulfonated, produce a fully bio-based PEM studied contribution separately when mixed matrix. Sulfonated nanocellulose-based shown perform similarly membranes, demonstrating good thermal-oxidative stability (up 190 °C), robustness (Young's modulus 1.15 GPa storage moduli >13 GPa), moisture-uptake capacity (ca. 6330 % after 48 h). The introduced promising materials proton-exchange material applications, required cells.
