Introduction Heroes are everywhere, and shine the brightest in dark. Although concept of heroism has been widely discussed fields philosophy social sciences, personality traits civil heroes emerging from great disasters remained unexplored topic. Methods The qualitative research methodologies conducted to dissect elucidate multifaceted heroes, through semi-structured interviews with 50 eyewitnesses participants relief efforts following Wenchuan Earthquake China. Results Civil ordinary individuals who display profound loyalty nation its people, uphold a steadfast belief self-reliance, boldly confront risks challenges, continually surpass themselves, strive accomplish remarkable feats. encompass five dimensions (i.e., patriotism love for independence self-improvement, relentless striving perseverance, selflessness fearlessness, grounded facts innovation), which intricately intertwine collectively shape luminous image serving as potent catalyst progress civilization. Discussion augments theoretical framework provides more comprehensive nuanced understanding inspiring dedicate themselves societal welfare foster harmonious beautiful society.
