Non-ionic polyethoxylated surfactants (nonylphenol polyethoxylates, alcohol polyethoxylates), their breakdown products (polyethylene glycol, nonylphenol carboxylates and carboxylates) other compounds were identified measured in various waste-water treatment samples (influent, effluent sludge). A generic protocol involving the use of sequential solid-phase extraction (SSPE) with octadecylsilica styrene–divinylbenzene cartridges series differential elution was used. Fractionated extracts analyzed by liquid chromatography-mass spectrometry (LC-MS) using atmospheric pressure chemical ionization (APCI) positive negative modes. For sewage plant (STP) sludge, involved lyophilization sludge followed sonication MeOH–CH2Cl2 (7 + 3) final clean-up SSPE protocol. Limits detection for target analytes ranging from 1.1 to 4.1 μg L−1 water 0.11 0.28 mg kg−1 achieved. The results obtained demonstrated inefficient removal physico-chemical STPs whereas elimination factors biological reached average values 77, 92 98% polyethoxylates (NPEOs) polyethylene glycols (PEGs), respectively. Quantitative coconut fatty acid diethanolamide (CDEA) activated process occurred. Nonionic synthetic surfactants, constituted of an assortment classes, are common ingredients industrial, household and body-care products. Alone or in combination with anionic they perform a variety functions including cleaning action, emulsification, skin conditioning, appearance consistency modification, solubilization dispersing agents. By far fatty alcohol ethoxylates (AEs) alkylphenol (APEs) more extensively used than any other nonionic surfactant class; however, works appearing the literature making reference to analysis classes have also been collected this review. The production volume worldwide AEs APEs, consequently their environmental impact, is very high. Although readily biodegraded, stable non-ethoxylated lipophilic residues remain for long periods aquatic environment sediments. In addition its harmful impact on food chain, there concern landscape spoiling, particularly coastal areas. analytical methods quality control surfactants industrial products samples revised commented upon here. fundamentals characteristics methods, most relevant operative statistical aspects, briefly presented.
