Abstract Surfactants are surface‐active agents widely used in numerous applications our daily lives as personal care products, domestic, and industrial detergents. To determine complex mixtures of surfactants their degradation unselective rather insensitive methods, based on colorimetric complexometric analyses no longer employable. Analytical methodologies able to low concentration levels closely related compounds matrices required. The recent introduction robust, sensitive, selective mass spectrometry (MS) techniques has led the rapid expansion surfactant research field including isomers, oligomers, homologues well chemically biodegradation products at trace levels. In this review, emphasis is given state‐of‐the‐art MS‐based analysis with an overview current landscape from traditional methods involving hyphenate (gas chromatography‐MS liquid chromatography‐MS) most innovative approaches, high‐resolution MS. Finally, we outline a detailed explanation utilization MS for mechanistic purposes, such study micelle formation different solvents.

Abstract The 20th century can properly be called the age of organic chemistry. Coastal environments receive a variety land‐derived inputs, both natural and synthetic. Among them, detergents are probably largest class technical products domestic use. Detergent science has undergone revolutionary changes since its early beginnings in 1930s. dramatic increase production completely altered our immediate human environment provided wealth new materials. Depending on compositions detergent molecules, they have transformed intentionally unintentionally. Thus, during last 2 decades, most published literature regarding analysis concentrated determination low levels surfactants their metabolites environmental In order to study nature, chemistry, behavior aquatic environment, goals this paper concern two main parts. first is present complete review chemical including surfactants, builders, additives, showing different types available. second goal provide comprehensive analytical technqiues used for surfactants. These techniques involve volumetric, colorimetric, Chromatographic, electrophoretic, spectroscopic, electrochemical methods.
