Abstract
Tissue-resident
macrophages
are
highly
heterogenous
and
perform
various
dedicated
functions
depending
on
their
locations.
In
particular,
skin
resident
have
intriguing
roles
in
long-distance
intercellular
signaling
by
mediating
cellular
protrusions
called
‘airinemes’
zebrafish.
During
pigment
pattern
formation,
relay
molecules
containing
‘airineme
vesicles’
from
one
cell
to
another.
Without
macrophages,
airineme-mediated
is
abolished,
disrupting
formation.
It
remains
unknown,
however,
if
the
same
macrophage
population
controls
both
these
typical
immune
or

separate
subpopulation

membrane

Cellular
communication
is
a
cornerstone
of
metazoan
development,
orchestrating
cell
behavior,
differentiation,
and
tissue
formation.
Morphogens,
key
signaling
molecules
for
patterning
architecture,
are
traditionally
thought
to
act
through
diffusion
or
endocytosis
but
struggle
explain
precise
long-range
gradient
formation
in
complex
tissues.
The
discovery
cytonemes,
specialized
actin-based
membrane
extensions,
has
introduced
novel
mechanism
direct
intercellular
signaling.
Their
dynamic
structure
allows
signaling,
ensuring
specificity
accuracy
morphogen
delivery,
which
essential
proper
differentiation.
In
this
review,
we
summarize
the
latest
advances
cytoneme
research
across
different
model
organisms
by
focusing
on
regulatory
mechanisms
functional
roles
stem
cells
developmental
disorders.

their
